so ive been realizing latlely that i want to update my ibook g4. i love it so much. it works just like a macbook does, without the intel and built in camera, lol. i dont video chat so i dont care about that (that rhymes :D lol).

i want to update to a better hdd. When i got mine from ebay, it has a 40 gb hdd which i had no problems with but when i got it, it only had 12 gbs, 12 GBS TO USE!! that is because of all the software and the os that was preloaded already on the ibook. so i deleted some apps and some useless outdated printer drives and happened to free up my hdd to to 16.5 gigs. so i was fine with that for a while. then as months go on, i add more music to my ipod. so itunes fills up with music and videos and less space on my hdd. i currently have 14.48 gigs of space on my hdd.

i went on ebay and found some hdds with like 100 gigs 150 gigs of space on them. now to me, thats perfect if im not using it for heavy duty stuff like on my desktop computer. 100-150 gigs will suite me for such an awesome and decent laptop.

but, my only problem is, if i update to a new hdd, goodbye OS, goodbye apps, goodbye everything. the laptop i got off ebay didnt come with any restore cds (yes i should have found with restore cds but this one was cheap). the only restore cds i have are from my ibook g3 clamshell with OS 9.2 Classic. the only way for me to get OS 10.5 leopard, is ebay, or a bootleg which i probably wont find.

So a question, should i just wipe my whole hdd i have now, or buy a new one or go to Apple and see if they can give me any information on it? i probably know for sure that they will be happy enough to replace the hdd for me which probably cost more money for me.

the second thing i would like to replace is the battery. the battery is good but in one day with good use, it drains quickly. and the only place to get a new one is ebay. im not to sure about replacing the battery because it holds out so i may wait on that.

i love my ibook g4. it has everything that i need for everyday and for school. i dont need a macbook, macbook pro, this is perfect for me and anyone else who is in highschool or even middle school looking for a decent laptop just for internet browsing and word processing like i use mine for, and video editing with imovie which i use a lot. lol. even a powerbook g5 would be good.

so what are your opinions about updating this. cause i know that 14.48 gigs wont last me a long time.

To keep all of the stuff on you hard drive, including the OS and everything, you'll need to clone it. There are a few free Cloning programs out there, just do some Googling. You'll need to buy an enclosure or a dock for your new hard drive, so you can clone the old one to it. This one looks like it will do the trick (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3516746&Sku=T925-1219). It is $30, though. You just pop in the new hard drive into the dock, and start the cloning software. That'll copy all of the contents of your old drive to the new one, then just take the old one out of the laptop, take the new one out of the dock, and put it into the laptop. Boot up and it should be fine.

Well thats how it works for a Windows based HDD, It's probably the same, though, as its all just files :)

And, sorry, I can't help you with the battery part. Google? :P

Yeah, I can't think of a cheaper way. Even if Apple would do it for you, I know they would charge, and bringing it anywhere else will also cost money. But I know how you feel, my old laptop only had a 40GB HDD, and I really had to scrimp with the amount of crap I put on it...
