Ardi Rizal, who lives in the fishing village of Musi Banyuasin, in Indonesia's South Sumatra, is part of a disturbing trend. Data from the Central Statistics Agency showed 25 percent of Indonesian children aged 3 to 15 have tried cigarettes, with 3.2 percent of those active smokers.
The percentage of five to nine-year-olds lighting up increased from 0.4 percent in 2001 to 2.8 percent in 2004, figures from the agency showed.
His father, Mohammad Rizal, said: "I'm not worried about his health, he looks healthy. He cries and throws tantrums when we don't let him smoke. He's addicted."

Wow, that's pretty hardcore, lol. I wouldn't expect a fucking two year old to enjoy smoking, but whatever. Indonesia has some weird customs.

Cigarette companies need money. So they go to poor nations and addict the children.
The companies have nothing to do with it, they are not raising the child.
Thats like blaming the gun company when someone gets shot.
The companies just make it, what people do with it is they're own cause.
..Don't understand how a kid so young would understand smoking...
Peace God

Do you agree or disagree with this statement. It is SEMI TRUTHFUL, just to let you know:
Tobacco is the only consumer good, that used as intended, kills.

They don't "understand" smoking. "My parents do it, I should too" is the idea and mentality. They don't need to understand smoking to become addicted to nicotine, either. Their brain is less mature but reacts the same to addictive substances like Nicotine or even Caffeine.
It is TRUE that tobacco companies target smoking to kids, primarily teens. They do not intend on getting 2 year old kids addicted...that's the parents fault. But in older kids, the tobacco companies (even in US) target primarily target them. They send out ads with vivacious young looking people and "hip" culture. I remember my parents got something a few years ago for "Camel Number 9" which target teens aged 14-17: http://www.counterfeitchic.com/Images/camel%20no%209%20and%20chanel%20no%2019.jpg

Cigarette companies are not allowed to target their ads to children anymore. They used to like back in the eighties in stuff, if I remember correctly. Now no cigarette ad can be intended for children, at all. This is for the U.S., by the way. In other countries, especially in poor ones, they probably go all out, but I dunno since I'm not them.

They aren't allowed to market "specifically" to children; however, they are completely allowed to make ads that seem hip and appeal to the younger generation as well as the older generation.
What you're referring to is that they are no longer allowed to sponsor kid activities, put their ads on TV, etc. They still can design their products to appeal to the desires of children without ever stating specifically "Buy these kids".
