I was wondering what does birth control do ? I know it protects not to get pregnant and stuff but what else what kind of hormones ?? Im 17 almost 18 in 5 months and I have a period like once a year and it sucks and I feel like my body isnt maturing .I DONT want to take it because of sexual relations I want to take it because i need the hormones. So my main question is should I take birth control just so i could get those extra hormones that im obviously missing ?
Thank you

By birth control, I'm gonna assume that you mean the oral contraceptive pill, however there are seriously so many other forms and it's important to find the one that suits you. You should discuss things with your GP to make sure you get the best benefit.

As for using it solely for hormones, it's probably best to not assume that it'll magically make things more 'normal' for you. So,I suggest going to your doctor, explaining your situation and asking for solutions. You may find that something as simple as hormone replacement pills will help you, or itmay even be better to wait a while and see if things sort themselvesout. It's also better to ask if there could be any underlying problems which would cause these things. If there is, then you'll be taught how to manage and deal with it. I know that it couldbe something like polycysticovaries which cause this, but it may be something as harmless as your body just producing too much testosterone or too little oestrogen.

You really wont know what will help the most until you talk to a professional. Good luck!

My mom takes birth control and she hardly gets her period. So no, it will not increase the time you get your period. it messes with your hormones, not gives you extra. all the women i know who take them, hate it. they say they feel weird. the only good thing is u get good skin, except u get fat.

It shouldnt make you "hardly get your period". It regulates it.

Anyways, I'd say go to a gyno because having your period once a year is not healthy in the least. I know someone that can't have babies because her menstrual cycle is so out of whack. Go to a doctor and they will tell you if they can do anything to help out with your period.

Yea, gotta agree with this. I've been taking the pill for a little while now and I feel perfectly fine. But like was said earlier, it's not a hormone supplement, it's hormone regulator. Regardless, you need to go see your gyno and she'll know what's best for your situation.

I think you need something else like a hormone supplement.... you should see your gyno!
