View Full Version : **** Censorship!

Censorship in the American media is part of a growing problem of government control. Not only is the fact that you aren't allow to choose what you see disturbing, but I am very perturbed by the FCC's priorities and the rating system.
A movie is more likely to get an R rating for sex, profanity, or nudity than it is for violence. Nobody was ever hurt by fuck, shit, bitch, or dick. Violence can be very harmful psychologically to younger children, even teenagers. Sex is one of the most natural things on earth, the discussion of it will even put a movie or tv show's rating up, and let's not forget about nudity,(please don't turn this into a debate on this subject in normal every day life) is it not harmful for children to know what an ant looks like better than a human? A child will grow up thinking their body is dirty and wrong. People should be allowed to choose what they view in the media, regardless of what the government prudes think. This country is supposed to be based on freedom, but something as simple as television is censored beyond belief.

Yeah, the F.C.C. should be worrying more about violence. I know how they get mad about profanity and stuff, but the main thing that ticks me off about censoring profanity is in the word "asshole", how they let the word "ass" be totally heard but censor "hole". That makes no sense!!
It'd be better if America had censorship laws like Europe's, in which they let nudity slide more than violence.
And people should be allowed to choose what offends them. Instead of totally censoring things, there should be warnings like "The following program contains mild/strong profanity, nudity, and mild/strong sexual content" and let the people who don't want to see that stuff just tune out and watch something else. The dumb F.C.C. is censoring the media, which is kind of unAmerican. And Corky Stanton once said "Sure, people are going to be offended by nude sunbathers, but if you never come across anything offensive, you know you're not living in a free country." Of course one could replace the phrase "nude sunbathers" with anything else. But you get the idea.

Well agreed.... violance has bee around for a long long long time.... but so has sex.... like kids movies show life and death.... such as lion king.... but heres the thing.... people give sex in movies an R rating or a PG13 rating if they REALLY fight it.... like titanic... Movies are aloud to say Fuck once in a movie to get a PG13 rating.... if they say it twice... its an R. The reason why they give these movies R (cant see it unless you are 17+) is because they dont want kinds starting at young ages learning about sexual things. Our hormones already are kicking in but showing us sexual movies just tempts kids.... and when u are 17 like me.... u can see them w.o a parent.... but i feel i have also matured since i was 13-16. If i started being sexually active since i was 13.... i wouldnt have cared that one slip up means the chance of being pregnant... now... i am very serious with that risk.... and take things seriously... so i feel now that i am 17. I have matured a lot. As for swearing... it is impolite and improper... would u say fuck infront of your grandparents? No... because it isnt polite... but we still use it today... why? because we feel its a cool filler word to make the sentance better.... call it... a Sentance enhanser if u will... but its only talking bad about something... such as, its a piece of shit (talking bad), Fucking a (talking bad), Bastard (talking bad, theres no swear word talking good about someone... unless u use it like.... Shit u look good.... but thats a dif story.... thats just using a swear word as a filler word.... so its not nice in sociaty... and most adults can control their swears... but most kids cant... they slip now and then.... which is why they dont want kids learning the F word in movies

its not like that all in Europe, Ireland has pretty strict censorship laws, like Playboy was banned here until the mid 90's.
i am all for censorship and i am very happy with our laws. i wont comment on the American system cause i just dont know it.

NEWSFLASH! Kids learn profanity in 4th grade or under from their peers. Also what makes it so adults are allowed to swear but "Daddy gonna beat yo mutha fuckin ass if you say that kinda shit one more time boy!" is what youll hear if you say it as a kid. Responsibility, that's the key. If you grow up with someting you're more responsible about it, like alcohol. Same with sex, if you encounter it in everyday life, no big deal, your parents and you will be more open, you'll be better informed, and you'll be more responsible. If Americans are going to grow up, they need to be allowed to.

Censoring things makes them more tabboo and makes young people more interested in them, so censorship should be less strict on most things.

For example, in 7th grade I met a girl, who was 14, and she did not know what sex was. She thought that the parents sent a letter to the stork on what kind of baby they wanted and the stork delivered it to the doorstep. I'm not joking. She really believed this. Turns out, due to her naivety, she had sex, but did not know what it was. She's 16 now and she has a kid. Why? Because she didn't know what she was doing. I guess she knows now.
:)
Whoah. And this girl was just plain naive, right? Because I really can't see how a kid wouldn't know what sex is when they're 14. It sounds impossible by today's standards.
I think that kids need to be exposed to nudity from a very early age so they'll be more mature about it when they're teenagers, and find no shame in it, which can be bad, trust me. And at the age of 10 is when parents should teach their kids about sex. Maybe let them watch movies/T.V. shows containing sex, but with supervision and a good talk about sexual responsibility.

That has nothing to do with censoring the media. That's lack of responsibility on the parents part not explaining to her. That's a completely different issue.

Yeah, maybe there should be a thread on teaching your kids about sex somewhere.

No, but what I meant (but didn't point out...) is that even though parents should teach their kids those things, when those things are never allowed in the media it portrays to kids who don't know that those things are bad. Therefore, kids are afraid to ask their parents if their parents are the kind that wait till a certain age for their kids to ask, and if they havent, then they say themselves. Usually it is too late, though, and by the time the parents step in, the kids are already having sex, contracting STD's and getting pregnant. Now, I'm not saying that a parent should plop their 5-year-old down in front of a graphic video where their's buttfucking or XXX material, but I do think that keeping it to where publishing companies could get in trouble if they print a children's book about Adam and Eve where one of Eve's breasts aren't covered by a fig leaf is a little too much.
Sure, parents should take the initiative. But, sometimes they don't, and if a child was able to see something along the lines of something they should ask their parent about then maybe there would be less cases of the 14 year old girl in my old school, imo.
I disagree. It's the parents problem if they don't explain sex to children. It's not the medias responsibility to teach it to them. Most likely the child isnt going to even understand what they mean or talk about in the tv show or movie anyways.
It's not that you have to wait one age to explain everything. You give it to them in doses that they can understand.
That girl's parents lied to her. That may have been the reason for her early sex, but it doesnt take a genius to figure out that it's not because of the media censorship. The media isnt responsible for educating sex. It's the responsibility of the parent. A responsibility that they inherited when they chose to have a child, wether planned or not.

i havent read everything here... but just wanted to say that i disagree with most censorships...
violence: i dont really care about it, i know its a movie, and that i am in the real world... it can happen to me, and i wont make the same thing the movie guy did (since they always do stupid stuff) and ill be more smart, and will try to trick the voilator...
sex: haha... this is funny... im reading "da vincis code" and in one part, langdon ask sophie what she was her grandpa doing.. then they start talking about this "sexual rite" called hieros gamos... in the ancient world (i mean, like aciently) sex wasnt like we see it nowdays... nowdays the women are treated really bad... mainly because history "says" that because of them worst of the things happened to us, such as being in a world like this... if eva (apparently) didnt take the apple, like god said, we wouldnt be here, but we would be in a paradise... but apparently was the church that changed all this, since jesus told maria magdalenna to take care of the church... this would have ruined the world, and the church and constantine changed history, like to say, and since that women are not what they actually are. before all this, all women were almost goddesses, because doing sex, men could see god, in what we now call orgasm... so men could go to churches to do sex with the women that would take care of it (huh... dont know the name in english...) because thru them they could see god, and more than a pleasure thing, like today, it was more something spiritual... i dont remember the reason, but the church changed all this, by saying that sex was something nasty, and should not be done... this book has kinda changed my way of seeing some things. anyways, i dont agree with sex censorship :P

Voilence harmful to children? Bullshit! I've played Duke Nukem since I was a little boy and look how I turned out. Okay, just kidding, I'll be serious now. Voilence is harmful to children under 5. But over that age it's okay. Unless the kid is really, really impressionable, or if the voilence is extremely brutal, there's no problem with him seeing a car being blown up by a rocket launcher. In fact it would probably entertain him. But there are some people out there who like to emulate stuff like action movies (namely, idiots) who shouldn't see voilence.
Children should be ALLOWED to see sex. Not have it shoved in their face. I'm fine with letting kids see sex or nudity if they really want to, but lying to kids about sex (like when a kid asks "where do babies come from?" the mother or father will ususally tell a shitload of lies) is just stupid. It's some weird cult thing we have going on where if a kid knows what the word "boob" means, the universe suddenly explodes. Not only does it make no sense but it takes more work to lie to your kids than it does to just come out and tell them. You know all those annoying fuckin' "you must be 18 or over, enter your date of birth, we have a policy against kids using this, etc etc" bullshit you see whenever you try to do ANYTHING? That's only there because of censorship. It's what I like to call the pussification of america.

Nobody ever said it was the media's job to teach kids about sex. Parents are just too much of pussies to tell their kids or even "give it to them in small doses" like you said. They can't deal with something even as simple as explaining to a kid "this is what happens when a man sticks his dick into a woman". Which is why the parents got bitchy and tried to censor the media so they could put off telling their kids until they're 18 and expect them to magically understand everything by that age. This is the reason that I hate censorship. It's just becuase of a wussy ass society who thinks that instead of supervising their kid and teaching them right from wrong, they think they should just ban everything objectable.

Well Ive been thinking about this for years its practicly everywhere.. The idea that
Sex is so bad for your children but violance is ok.. Just shows how stupid and ignorant the people are who set those ratings

I dont know why we have "bad words". Fuck=sex, Shit=feces, Piss=urine, Dick=penis, Pussy=vagina, Bitch=female dog. I we say any of these words most likely as kids we would get in trouble. But if we said what they really mean I would be overlooked. We really have no reason to say "bad words".

The three major effects of seeing violence on television are:
* Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others.
* Children may be more fearful of the world around them.
* Children may be more likely to behave in aggressive ways toward others
Imitation is a high human element, especially among the young. Just one publicised school shooting, in my view, leads to imitation.
FACT: The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes sixth grade (approximately 13 years old).
Parents are seemingly okay with this, but will swoop down upon the media if their child catches the sight of a nude person on television?
Censorship is indeed controversial, but American parents and basically the American people need to get their priorities straight.

Look, heres what i say.
On albums and music-no censorship, because the artist wants to be known for his words and lyrics and opinions, so we shouldn't be censoring it. People associate swearing with being an ass, so if a musician wants to look like an ass, then thats what he wants and we shouldn't censor it.
On movies or television, i think a critic rating should be put on shows before their theme song. Like a "this media presentation has been Rated R" or something. I think that if you pay to see a movie, it should be exactly how the movie is made. Television is a sketchy subject, because its not monitored as well by a superior being than movies. How do you know your 5 year old isnt watching BET and learning how to say 'nigger'? A lot of times, people pin that on the parents or guardians fault, saying things like, "oh well they shouldnt leave their child home alone, or they should not buy cable television...blah blah blah" but i mean, come on, thats not fair to the parent or guardian. I do think that censoring Television should be illegal, because if BET wants to allow the word 'nigger' on one of their shows or songs or w/e, then they should know that they are taking the risk that a 5 year old might see the program. And with that risk, a parent or guardian should be able to sue networks if they think that there are errors in their televized programs.

All cable has blocking features, so that shouldn't happen if the parent doesn't want it to.
