"Revenge is a dish best served cold."
The opening quote from the Tarantino comeback film after a six year hiatus, of filmmaking, suggests that the following is a brutal film of revenge. And it exactly is. But not is it only full of graphic violence and vengeful mercilessness, it is full of humor and the appropriate dialogue for the film. All elements that are expected and loved from Tarantino.
We follow "The Bride" (Uma Thurman) on her journey of payback after being beaten furiuously and shot in the head by "Bill" (David Carradine), her former lover all on her wedding day. After waking up from a deep coma for four years, she finally realized what had just happened to her. He tried to kill her. But oh no, it wasn't just Bill that had set up the assassination attempt, it was also her former collegues in the "Deadly Viper Assassination Squad".
So it has begun. She travels to Japan to kill her first target, "O-ren Ishii" (Lucy Liu). As queen of the Tokyo mobworld known as the Yakuzas, she parades herself, proud of her status. But it also makes it easier for her to find. When "The Bride" shows up at their meeting place. A bloody battle ensues between her and O-ren's personal army "The Crazy 88". That battle scene goes down in cinematc history as one of the most violence sequences in a single film. Blood flowing like fountains, heads being lopped right off, people having axes thrown at them, and even people being split right in half. After flawlessly sliceing and diceing (quite literally)her way through 88 bodyguards, her and O-ren are finally alone and can battle face to face.
You may have noticed that the thread's name is "Kill Bill Vol.1" because Tarantino decided to split what would have been a long 3 hr+ epic, is now 2 seperate, perfectly portioned films. I'll post a review of Kill Bill Vol.2 later this month. I personally believed that this film is a celebration of filmmaking. You'll find Tarantino chose to do this film in the style of genre sampling. You'll see samurai sword film sequences, you'll see a 70's Kung Fu movie opening scene, and a hint of a spaghetti western film here and there. And now like my previous post, I welcome you to share your thoughts, and post opinions. Messege me if you'd like to get my reviews on other films.
Thanks for reading. :D Kill Bill Vol.1
Director:Quentin Tarantino
Producer:Lawrence Bender
Rating: R for graphic bloody violence, strong language, and brief sexuality
