The girl waits until nightfall.
She stares at the noose she’s prepared
Just a rope
Just an escape
Just a possibility.

She picks up a list.
All of the reasons she’s here
With no audience to watch her final scene.

Words fill her eyes just as they fill her mind.
Joined letters to form sentences
The lines on the paper mock her.

There’s one list she’s forgotten.
A compilation of reasons to live.
Everything she’s tied to.
People, places, things.

She steps back from eternal sleep
As she thinks of the roots she’s planted.
They were never gone, merely forgotten.

The girl locks away the razorblades,
Throws out the diet pills.
Unties the hangman’s knot
And gets into bed.

Tomorrow, she’ll go to school.
Tomorrow, she’ll sit next to you in class.
Finishing the homework she never planned to do.
Reminding herself of that second list,
She’ll stay another day.
