View Full Version : What does it mean when they do this?

Really not sure where to put this, but here goes.
In my friend group, whenever one of my male friends takes the piss out of me (not in a bad way as such, more in a joking sort of way, which I do back) some of the girls go 'awwww dont be mean to him' when they do it to me.
Anyway, I find this incredibly patronising. Its like they feel sorry for me, and I hate it. They dont seem to say it to anyone else. I feel like the kid who everyone has to be nice to. Also, dont mean to sound sexist here, but I don't feel like a 'man' if a girl is sticking up for me.
Anyway, why do girls do this? Is it because they feel sorry for me? Are they just showing concern for a friend? Or does it mean they like me more than friends? I have no idea, so I need some help :D
Thanks

Well, it could be a number of things. If these girls are good friends with you, they may actually be showing affection for you, but that does not mean they like you. If they're just acquaintances, then they could be picking with you, but then again, none of this is for sure. A lot of girls do it, I believe it's just them being nice, but that's not always the case.
It all lays on the kind of relationship you have with these girls.

They may be friends or acquintances in some way with you and are being nice on a personal level. Alternatively, they may like you or the opposite, patronise you.

What does take the piss out of you mean? I have to admit i've never heard that saying before.
I know how you feel. I don't like it when girls get involved and defend me. It makes me feel...weak. If i understand your situation correctly, it sounds like they're just playing along and defending you. They could really like you (as a friend, don't get too excited now) and feel comfortable enough around you that they'll get involved. I don't think they do it in a guy sort of way, where they're actually going to fight on your behalf, but more in a playful way.

It basically means just fighting you until you are worn out.

'taking the piss' is a saying common in the UK (where i'm from). Basically, if you take the out of someone, you're making fun of them. Sometimes it can be done as a form of abuse, but sometimes just as a joke, like what my friends are doing here.
Thinking about it now, its quite a wierd saying :D

Good to know. Hahah i hate it when i don't know cultural stuff like that...makes me feel like such a stereotypical "american". We have stuff like "kicking the shit out of" (abusive) or "annoying the hell out of"(not abusive) ...both don't really make any sense.

well wen i do it im kinda saying "why would you say that" to the person who is making fun of another. especially if its not true.
and if this guy is making fun of you all the time maybe you should try to distant yourself from him. not necessarily leave the group of friends you hang out with, but interact with other people in the group.

Maybe they do think of you as a really nice kid and so they feel bad when you have the piss taken out of you. Are you smaller or shorter or younger than your friends? That could be why too.
