World War 3?

This is a quote from the foreword of a historical novel of Nazi Germany. May theologies, philosophies, conspiracist theories, and just ordinary people who don't affeliate themselves with any of the above believe in a World War 3. A war that will end all wars. A war that will destroy the world or the majority of it. Whether my cutting off human life, or destroying the entire planet. Many people believe in this. My question is do you? Do you believe the world will be ended by a massive war? A third world war?

If the world leaders have any sense at all they will not start a WW3 because we all know it will be fought with Weapons of mass destruction and it will wipe out the whole human race and I dont think anyone wants that to happen and for our planet to become an inhabited wasteland.

World War III, if it were to actually happen, would likely not occur with nuclear weapons being credible threats any longer, as the very existence of MAD, I would argue, nearly ensures such a war would not happen. I would argue that in order for a third world war to occur, nuclear weapons will have to become obsolete; obsolete in that we have developed the necessary defense weaponry to ensure that IBMs and IRBMs no longer pose a credible threat. Indeed, with newer weapon technologies, this is a huge possibility, as we are already seeing promising weapons that can be effective at either disarming or destroying nuclear weapons far before they can hit their targets.

At such a point where nuclear weapons, or more appropriately, their carrier missiles, are no longer able to pose a credible threat, the possibility for global warfare increases, substantially. MAD ensures that nuclear armed countries do not attack each other; apropos, the most powerful countries in the world, who make world wars happen, all happen to have large stock-piles of nuclear weapons. The nation-state is, at least in a holistic sense, a rational actor on the geopolitical stage, as such, a nuclear war is most unlikely; which, I would argue rules out the "destruction of the world" in a war scenario.

In the case of a world war, post-atomic age, I would argue such a war would be more destructive than the previous two, but because nuclear weapons have been deemed obsolete, we would not see the destruction of the world, as it were. Einstein is often quoted saying: "I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones"; though a quaint quote, to be sure, I do not take too much stock in it.

The closest thing to a WWIII I can see happening is North Korea against the world. While China will support them if the US attacks them preemptively, if they cross the line and spill the first blood, they'll be on their own without the support of other countries. Though NK possesses nukes, they're still a fairly weak country on their own. I expect such a war will be very short-lived.

I don't think WWIII will be fought with nukes. Sometime in the future, it might happen, and if it happened anyway, technology would be so advanced that even before it reached the danger zone it would've been destroyed. Speaking of North Korea and Iran, if they ever use their puny stock of nukes, I'd doubt that NATO or other affected countries will. If they ever do, I wouldn't see kim Jong Il and that Mahmoud-btard walk away smiling like an arse.

I'm happy to say that it wouldn't happen now, the world is just too stable to go into a worldwide war. Unless some country (probably the two mentioned) has the balls to challenge the world into a cage match, or global economy is plunging into the abyss, I say there will be no wars until I see Kim Jong Il's face everywhere. :P

to get the closest insight of what world war 3 would look like, you should look at the back story of a game called Fallout 3 and the rest of the series. it's all about the diminishing supplies of crude oil and how over the final struggles for the search sees the likes of the U.N failing and all countries running tight embargoes on their importing and exporting of goods, trying to preserve as much for themeselves. the war comences in 2077 for two hours in which every country unleashes their whole nuke supplies in a chain reaction of everyone bombing each other.
the game focuses mostly on the USA and even though it takes place in the near future their is a cultural lock with the 50's style still present, so it wouldn't be very accurate to todays technology, it's more made as how American 50's sci fi and propaganda would have seen "the world of tommorow" with the modern worlds greatest problem.

and all this nonesense of how North Korea would be able to start the whole world war 3 themeselves as Gaul said before "the world is just too stable" at this present time. if the likes of kim jong or whatever his name is tried to launch a nuclear warhead that can't even reach Japan and invaded the likes of Vietnam or China they would be ultimatly fucked. they may have the biggest army in the world, but it is a nation locked in the Cold war. through the varieties of Embargoes that the United Nations has implaced on the country they have been unable to secure any ultimatly modern equipment with the army only being the largest on the Infantry scale. if it came to a stage where they did decide on all out war they would be demolished by China alone (an invasion on China would be unlikely as China has been their closest ally for centuries.) or if they tried to set a naval invasion squad to Japan they would just be taken out by US/Japanease and other U.N forces before they reached shore.
