Pittsburgh marathon course altered by bomb scare

(AP)

Police in western Pennsylvania say they detoured the final segment of the Pittsburgh Marathon after an explosive device was found.

Police said the device was found in a small microwave oven on the sidewalk after the leaders had finished the course Sunday morning. Several blocks near the original finish line for the marathon and half-marathon were cordoned off, and the bomb squad used a robot to disable the device. The all-clear was given for the area shortly before 11 a.m.

About 5,000 people took part in the full marathon.

Jeez, good thing I don't live on the east coast. Between this and the car bomb in Times Square, what's going on?

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — Police destroyed a microwave oven found near the finish line of Sunday's Pittsburgh Marathon but officials said they now believe the small oven did not contain an explosive device.

Hours after a car bomb was discovered in New York's Times Square, the oven was found on a sidewalk in front of a bus terminal near the site where about 5,000 people were going to complete the 26.2-mile morning race.

The Pittsburgh Bomb Squad evacuated and secured the area near the oven and then detonated it, removed it from the scene and reopened the area. There were no injuries.

Kevin Kraus, a police lieutenant, said the bomb squad determined the oven contained elements that resembled an explosive device.

"Certainly from what we did see on the X-rays, we were highly concerned," he said. "At this point, we believe it was not an actual explosive devices, but we are still evaluating the microwave and its contents.

Police are examining surveillance cameras in the area to learn who put the device on the street.
