View Full Version : Girls and their periods

Im male, and im curious about girls and their periods.
A lot of girls seem to say to boys 'oh, you dont know what its like for girls' , 'girls suffer more than boys' , 'boys dont understand' etc etc etc. Im sorry, but I can't help but get slightly pissed off when they say this.
Some girls seem to become not very nice, argumentative, and bite your head off when their 'time of the month' comes. They seem to use periods as an excuse SOMEtimes. I can understand how periods are painful and uncomfortable etc, but is it fair to blame it on family and friends and everyone else? I think not.
BUT, I know a few girls in my friend group who are very nice, outgoing, have great personalities, always smiling etc. There are times about every month where they are less talkative, not in such a great mood (im guessing this is when they have their periods), BUT they dont bite people's heads off, they still are nice, and still seem to keep a smile, despite having a period.
I understand how some girls may have more painful/heavier periods than other girls, but its nice to have girls who are still themselves when they have a period.
I know that I, and all other boys, do not know what its like to have periods, but we will never be able to know, and we can't walk around in your shoes. The same as girls can't walk around in boys shoes (metaphorically).
So I'd like to hear opinions from girls, to maybe set me straight and correct me if im wrong, and tell us what its really like. Also opinions from boys would be good.
Thanks,
Steve :)

Well, i do understand from where you're coming from, some girls tempers can be honestly quite nasty. However not all girls are like it, my girlfriend is sometimes pretty chilled when shes on her period, in fact she becomes somewhat more chilled than normal :P I guess the best way to think of it is when things go wrong for us, or we're in a bad mood we blame everyone else and take it out on them without meaning to, its probably the same for them except its the hormones doing it. From what my girlfriends told me, they get tired quicker on their periods and sleep more. so think about how moody people get without sleep :P People vary, so like i said some girls..well, you know when to stay away and others are just completely chilled about everything.

I cannot decide which would be worse, being physically male or female. But I don't think I fully understand what the whole 'time of the month' thing is all about, either. The only symptoms I experience regularly is fatigue and diarrhea, although I've noticed that feelings of depression seem to be heightened as well - only if I've been depressed for a while to begin with.
I don't make any of those 'annoying comments' as quoted, and I don't honestly view periods as a huge deal. It's only a few days out of every month, and it will pass. The experience of living includes many inconveniences, this being one out of many more, and people need to accept it.

Every girl is different when it comes to her time of the month. Some get extremely bitchy, some you don't even notice at all unless they say something. I had a friend that used her period as an excuse to be mean about everything, saying she was premenstrual, menstrual, post-menstrual, and almost premenstrual. Some girls just don't get the awful moods, and some only get them in correlation to cramps, which is how I am, because they hurt like hell even after taking painkillers. It sometimes feels pretty true to the description that me and my friends use in that your uterus is falling out.

For a lot of girls it is really painful, for myself it feels like someone is taring out my insides. It hurts moving and sitting. Give girls a break the have this painful thing inside them 12 times a year for about 30+ years AND have to give birth. (Girls get pissed when guys talk about how much it hurts to get hit in the balls. It hurts girls a lot also to get hit in the boob.)

Periods really do suck for girls, I mean if a girl is complaining about how she's on her period and doesn't feel good or whatever, she's definitely not lying. They're terrible. And it makes it worse when guys are like "is it your time of the month or something?" That's just rude. (You don't seem to be that kind of guy, which is good lol.) And I'll admit..I can be bitchy on my period..some months are worse than others. It honestly depends on who I'm around (I have some friends who don't think before they speak and sometimes say stuff that really irritates me) and how bad the cramps and whatnot are. I'm typically moodier during my period and although I might not act like a bitch every time, usually I'll cry easier and stuff like that.

first of all, welcome to VT :)
periods, for me, are a weird thing. some months i'm fine and my mood, personality etc hardly change at all. but then there are other times when i go through the "quiet" phase, or i can be rebellious, or crying - it really does change from month to month for me anyway.
i dont know if i'll go as far to say that guys have it really easy, because i could only imagine how embarrassing to get a random boner or what or not. i can say though, that another reason why girls snap so easily is because its not just period pain. its a aching back, sore boobs, headaches, fatigue etc. i try not to blame my bad mood on hormones, even though i know that that's what it is.
all i can say is that every girl is different. some milk it for all it's worth whereas others dont like to draw attention to themselves. i feel sorry for my dad though - he had his wife and two daughters who's body clocks decided to "synchronise" (and my sister is a massive hypochondriac!)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Cassann08, thanks for the welcome - and much respect to your dad lol
Most of the girls I know remain mostly themselves when they have their periods, and I have a lot of respect from them, especially after hearing what its like to have a period from this forum and other sources.
I get fed up with BOTH girls saying things like 'girls suffer more than boys' , 'you dont know what its like' , and ALSO boys saying things like 'oh shes just grumpy cos its the time of the month' , and saying to girls 'oh stop having a period about it' .
Like I have already said, boys will NEVER know what its like to be a girl, and girls will NEVER know what its like to be a boy! :)
And I can say getting hit in the balls IS painful - some boys over-react and fall on the floor complaining, whereas some just try not to make a big deal out of it.
Although the pain of being hit in the balls only lasts about 10 minutes, and a girl's period can last a few days or more, so i cant really compare the two lol.

heyy, well it kinda depends on the girl and how their mood is origionally.
me, im always moody, agressive ect. but everyone i know have come to terms with that and they just try and work around it. when my monthly comes around i get more crabby ect and for me the pain is so much that for hours sometimes i cant walk, but i never use it as an excuse, quite the opposite in fact.
whenever someone jeers me and says "oh i think its her time of the month" if i snap at them i turn around and say "no, actually, it has nothing to do with that you just pi$$ed me off." i never use it as an excuse but seriously, it can be very painful as can being hit in the balls (i seen that happen to a friend and it isnt very pleasant to watch) but just back off a little on the girls who change a little. try to steer away from comments that might make them snap, and try to make them see that maybe how they are acting during their monthly isnt really great and could they try to tone it down. i lost a friend over how i acted once and since then i have tried to refrain from snapping at the slightest thing. xx
