A 72-year-old grandmother is to have a child with her grandson.

Pearl Carter and Phil Bailey, 26, have paid a surrogate mother £20,000 to have Mr Bailey’s child, which the couple plan to bring up together.

Mrs Carter, from Indiana, met Mr Bailey four years ago after he tracked her down following the death of his mother, Lynette.

Mrs Carter fell pregnant with Lynette at 18, out of wedlock, and claims that she was forced to give her child up for adoption by her strict Catholic parents.

She went on to marry, but never had any more children.

The couple, who claim to be abused in public and could face prison for incest, say that they fell in love and became lovers soon after meeting.

In an interview with the New Zealand magazine, New Idea, Mrs Carter, said: “I’m not interested in anyone else’s opinion.

"I am in love with Phil and he’s in love with me. Soon I’ll be holding my son or daughter in my arms and Phil will be the proud dad.”

Mr Bailey said: “I love Pearl with all my heart. I’ve always been attracted to older women and I think Pearl is gorgeous. Now I’m going to be a dad and I can’t wait.

“Yes, we get laughed at and bullied when we go out and kiss in public but we don’t care. You can’t help who you fall for.”

Mrs Carter said that she searched for her lost daughter for many years, finally giving up hope 15 years ago. After Mr Bailey’s mother died from cancer, he decided to find his grandmother, finally tracking down her address and writing to her.

Mrs Carter, who was then single, said: “I was stunned to get his letter. My heart jumped that I’d be re-united with a grandson.

"When he emailed me a photo, I thought what a handsome and sexy man he was before pinching myself – he was my grandson. I wrote back immediately and included my phone number.

“From the first moment that I saw him, I knew we would never have a grandmother-grandson relationship. For the first time in years I felt sexually alive.”

Mr Bailey, a carpenter, said that he too felt instant attraction towards his grandmother. He said: “I wanted to kiss her there and then. My feelings were overwhelming.”

After a night out during their first week of dating, Mrs Carter decided that she would no longer hide her feelings from her grandson.

She said: “I called Phil into my bedroom, sat him on the bed, and then I leant over and kissed him. I expected rejection but instead he kissed me back.

“Living with Phil as my life partner has been amazing. He cooks and cleans and we make love three times a week. We can’t keep our hands off each other.’

A year ago, Mr Bailey announced that he wanted a child. Mrs Carter told him she was also desperate for a baby, but it was one wish that she could not fulfil as she had already gone through menopause.

The couple then decided to use Mrs Carter’s retirement money to find a surrogate mother and buy a donor egg to inseminate with Mr Bailey’s sperm.

They placed an advertisement asking for an open-minded surrogate, and Roxanne Campbell applied.

“Initially I was shocked,” said Miss Campbell, on learning the couple were related. “But they’re a brilliant pair and I saw how much they loved each other. I know the baby will be loved too.”

The couple sees Miss Campbell, 30, once a month and accompany her for scans.

Mrs Carter said: “I am just so happy. I am finally going to be a mum and not forced to give up my child.

“Phil’s going to be a great dad. I never in a million years thought at 72 I’d be 'pregnant' and in love with my grandson. I make no apologies and I believe God’s given me a second chance."

I feel sorry for the kid.....
even if its genetically okay cause the chances of inbreeding being an issue so soon is slim
the social stigma this would involve.....
owch

thats gnarly

I'm not one to criticize people's sex lives or choice in partners,
But quite and odd couple, I have to say.
To each their own I suppose.
I only feel sorry for the child,
Due to the criticism it will get growing up on it's 'mom' and dad.
At 72 though, she won't be around very long to be a mother,
The average life expectancy in the US is 78.

"It's called Genetic Sexual Attraction.
The rate of family members who fall in love after being separated at birth and not growing up together is oddly quite high, and this has come to light in recent years where there has been a surge in children adopted out of families being reunited with their genetic mothers/fathers/brother/grandparents etc., as there have been quite a few relationships where both parties have acted upon their attraction to each other.

The baby isn't going to be genetically the grandmother's child. The argument against incest is usually that the children sometimes develop biological problems. That doesn't apply here. And I'm not going to judge two adults who are in a loving and committed relationship just because I think the thought of being with my grandparents is vile. Because that's where this instinctive distaste for incest comes from, right? Because we can't understand it ourselves by applying it to our own lives. Not because of the possibility of risks through childhood. That's the way of expressing the gut reaction of 'this is wrong'.

The problems I see in this relationship are quite simple—the life expectancy for women in the USA is 80 years. The chance of her living to see the child reach adulthood is really very slim and this would obviously be destructive for the child.
Also, now that these people's faces are plastered all over the news, it might be hard for the kid to grow up anonymously and this will most probably result in bullying."

If those two want to be together and have sex (That is wrong... really. Isn't it?), I have no problem. It's when they want to bring a child into their sick relationship that I see issues.

Imagine what that child is going to go through when he/she goes to school and gets talking to people about the 80yo 'mother'. If it weren't for the child then I wouldn't have any real problem with them being together.

I'm just wondering what the birth defects of that child will be... HOLY SHIT.

Also, that child is going to require some serious threapy when he/she finds out that its mother is really its great grandmother and its father is its mothers grandchild. Not to mention the school problems...

Incest is wrong for so many reasons.

The baby shouldn't have any because they're using a surrogate mother and all that.

To be honest, this is very creepy, and why are they having a child? The child will be growing up without a mother.

Didn't see the part about buying a donor egg. Usually when they use a surrogate mother, it usually has the embryo transplanted after fertilization from the biological mother to the surrogate mother.

Maybe I should finish reading things instead of posting something in a giant rush since I have to go.....

I read about this earlier... I must say, how mind bogglingly creepy. The very notion of doing anything remotely sexual with my grandparents is absolutely mortifying.

I don't really care about their incestuous relationship... I mean it's mighty bizarre and many (include myself) are against that kind of thing and feel that it's "disgusting" and "wrong", but it's really not anyone's business... they're both adults, they can do whatever they like.

I just feel mighty bad for this child. If this kid ends up suffering emotional trauma from being called a "freak" constantly and being tortured and ridiculed by others its whole life, I'll say I'm not surprised. And also this woman is in her 70's, so the chances she's going to live to see this child become an adult are slim, which makes it even worse.

I mean, I have no problem with strange couples, but grandma and grandson getting it on? What the fuck, I mean, really? That kid, I just feel so sorry for him, he will never be able to live a normal life. Poor kid.

Who cares? Historically, humans have been fucking their relatives since the dawn of time.

Does it hurt the gene pool? Yeah, but we hurt the gene pool by keeping Lady Gaga and Regina Spektor alive. Those no-talent hacks are still around despite the fact.

HOLY CRAP! i had no clue there was a friggin name for it! In my opinion I also find it gross. That's like any of us boning our grandpas or grandmas. Im acctualy kinda shocked that the grandma is even doing that knowing the fact that she has a religious background O_O

You do realise the child is not going to be biologically hers right? Therefore no genetics will be messed up.
