Im a new member
I can't send private msgs to members until I have made 25 posts
I totally understand this rule because it keeps away spammers or bad people that want to use the site for wrong reasons.
But what I dont understand is why allow people to be able to send ME msgs??
It doesnt make sense
I have like 7 msgs from people welcoming me, asking me questions, wanting to know about me and I cant even answer them.
What must they be thinking?
They think Im a snob or that I cant be bothered replying
if I make about 4 posts a day it will be a week before I can even make contact with these people and make friends.
I just think that if anyone tries to send a msg to a new member whos post count is less than 25 it should be blocked with a msg that says

This member is new and cannot send or receive private messages until their post count is above 25

Having it look like Im ignoring people isnt a great first impression to meeting people and making friends.

The 25 post count rule is a rule that all people that join up here know about, so most likely the people that have welcomed you will know that you cannot reply to them.

...and the people who will be sending you messages will be aware of this rule and will know why you arent replying
and it really isnt hard to get 25 posts

Getting 25 posts isn't difficult. Plus now, most people know about the rule so they'll understand if you don't reply for a few days.

Just keep on posting and explain why it took so long to reply.

Not everyone knows about this rule. I don't see a problem with having something like that. It makes sense.

I would have something like that if it could be easily implemented.

As I see it in an ideal world the noob would not be allowed to create new pms from scratch but would be able to reply to a pm they receive from an established member. However, in practice there are limitations as to what options are available in vbulletin.

As most of the previous posters have said, establish members will know that you cant reply if you have less than 25 posts and so wont take it as any sort of insult.

Isn't it kinda creepy that you're getting so many private messages to begin with?...
Considering you've just joined and don't know anyone.
It's been awhile since I was a new member, but when I joined people didn't do that.

Yeah I agree with this.

Didn't even get PMs asking to talk [besides the odd p101er...] until hitting around 500 posts.

If it's someone worth talking to they probably know about the 25 post minimum to PM thing.

Well thats because Im awesome :D lol
I got 7 PMs
3 of them are saying welcome and the other 4 are about posts I made or advice I gave on a forum.
I dont know why its CREEPY?
I thought that was the point of this place. to meet people and chat and stuff. But i will be careful

Yea hopefully most people know about the post count rule.
And I understand its not real easy to just add a feature to the site. Theres programming and stuff involved.
Thanks for listening tho

Yes please be careful. If a member asks for personal information, wants to pic trade, or anything that makes you uncomfortable be sure to let me or another moderator know.

It's creepy, and it's also absolutely predictable. Look around the forum, the people who have pictures of themselves and are decently attractive end up with 1000000 friends and no doubt PMed all over the place behind the scenes as well. Not exactly hard to guess why.

I'm curious, IF on the off chance you were PMd during the period when you have less than 25 posts, will they show up in your inbox once you hit 25?

You will see them instantly. Just won't be able to reply to them

I don't see what the big deal is about the getting 25 posts to be able to PM.
Getting 25 posts is simple, can be done in a matter of minutes. Plus it's not as if it's anything urgent.

Actually, that's a good idea. How hard would it be to implement? And what would be needed?

Not really, I only post in ONE section on the entire forums, on top of that, the section is the most inactive section, and I have NO trouble getting 100 posts.

It's really not all that bad in my opinion.

It strays predators away, but isn't that hard to attain for legitimate members who actually want to be here for the right purpose. A tad annoying if you absolutely want to use the message system as a function to help people/get to know them, but all good things take time to achieve I s'pose.
