Two teenage girls kicked a gay man to death as he lay unconscious in Trafalgar Square in a shocking killing likened to a scene from the movie Clockwork Orange, the Old Bailey heard.

Ruby Thomas and Rachel Burke, both 18, stamped on Ian Baynham's chest and kicked him in the head after their friend Joel Alexander, 19, punched him to the ground, jurors heard.

As the dying man lay bleeding on the ground under a hail of kicks, he began fitting from the brain damage to his fractured skull.

When Mr Baynham's friend stepped in to save the dying man, Burke attacked him too, it was said.

The three killers fled the scene and Mr Baynham was rushed to hospital but he never woke up again and died 18 eighteen days later.

Brian Altman, QC, prosecuting, had told jurors that Mr Baynham and Philip Brown were walking through Trafalgar Square on the evening of September 25 last year, 'minding their own business.'

The barrister explained: 'The scene is Trafalgar Square at the very heart of London, one of this city's most famous open spaces, home to the National Gallery, Nelson's Column, the famous plinths and late that evening, a scene of despicable violence.

'One onlooker likened the level of violence to a scene from the film Clockwork Orange.

'What happened was an all too familiar and depressing tale of drunken, loutish behaviour. But what they did went far beyond mere anti-social conduct.

'Remarkably, two of these defendants are teenage girls.

"Fuelled by copious amounts of alcohol, all three jointly participated in a violent attack on a defenceless man in public.

'Mr Baynham was openly homosexual and what led to his death began with Thomas hurling homophobic abuse at him and his friend Mr Brown. She called them "f***ing faggots."

'Mr Baynham grabbed and slapped her. Alexander intervened and lunged at him, punching him in the face. He fell to the ground.

'It is certain that the force of the punch was such as to render him unconscious. His head hit the pavement and there was nothing to break his fall. The impact was so heavy that he suffered severe brain damage from which ultimately he was to die.

'However, that did not suffice. There's evidence that the females then began putting the boot into Mr Baynham as he lay unconscious on his back. He was deeply in distress from the blow.

'Shocked onlookers saw repeated stamping on his chest and forceful kicks to the head.

'He began making snoring noises, evidence of unconsciousness, and fitting on the pavement, signs of primary brain damage.

'It was obvious that Mr Baynham was critically injured.'

Mr Baynham had suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

When Mr Brown stepped in to save his dying friend, Burke turned on him, the court was told.

The QC explained: 'He was assaulted by Burke when he tried to prevent her from escaping from the main incident. She punched him several times in the face.'

Mr Baynham was left with brain damage and rushed to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London where in died on October 13.

Alexander, of Thornton Heath, Surrey, Burke, Maxfield Lane, Three Oaks, East Sussex, and Thomas, of Whittington, Litchfield, Staffordshire, All deny manslaughter and violent disorder.

Burke further denies causing Mr Brown actual bodily harm.

The trial continues.

That's pretty messed up, to say the least. If you do those kinda things, at least man up, y'know?

Also, I don't see why putting asterisks where letters belong to censor something. It's so pointless and angers me. It's so pointless because you know what the word is.

I also just learned about that movie yesterday. Weird...

The asterisks are verbatim from the newspaper article - their asterisks not mine.

What really pissed me off most about that is there were on-lookers. Actual witnesses who saw the attack take place. Yet only the man's friend actually attempted to save him. Trafalgar is a busy place and there must've been dozens of people there who saw the attack. Yet none of them did anything to help. I fucking hate the society we live in where we all just turn a blind eye and carry on. Oh how fucking terribly British of us! We need to grow the fuck up and grow some spines! I am so angry at this! ARGH!!!

Its a sick shame :/ It's just the way society is now. It's full of pluralistic ignorance and usually even when someone does help no one else will step in after them, Especially when it comes to something like this. Usually too worried about getting harmed themselves. I hope they get sent down for it. At least bloody own up to it for christs sake, shows how immature they are really.

see
If i went to intervene in this, I wouldn't let my guard down and restrain myself like he probly did, just so I could get punched myself multiple times.
I would sneak up behind her, scream loud so she'd turn around, and then I'd instantly cold clock her.
Then i'd tackle her bitch friend

equal rights -shrug-

Get them off the poor kid
and they'd be around for the cops to deal with
hopefully, an ambulance could arrive in time

But from the sounds of the cou and counter-cou injuries in his skull
the sheering along the neural pathways that would result
and then a massive internal hemorrhage on top of that causing sever damage from compression do to the confined space within a human skull
considering I doubt anybody there was in a position nor the mind set to cut a section of his skull out allowing the brain to expand outside his head, which would have lessened the damage severely...buuuuut is a touchy procedure not to be performed on some dark sidewalk by random on lookers lol.
ya....Nobody could have done anything, even if you managed to save the body, his essence would be lost.

I must say, I am extremely surprised that this took place right in the middle of a tourist attraction in London.

I hope all three attackers spend a LOOONG time in prison for this murder.

I would have helped too. If they didn't have a weapon...then I could take them...and even if I couldn't I would have done something at the very least

That is just terrible. I think that sucks that someone was killed simply for being themself.
