Just Another School Shooting

Jimmy Clay and Brendan Baker are your average teenage outcasts. Jimmy, a sophomore in high school, is considered an “uncool loner” by most of the kids in his grade. Brendan, a senior, is considered a “creep” and “one messed up motherfucker” by the majority of the kids in his grade and the grades below him. Brendan and Jimmy aren’t best friends, but they’ve put together a plan that only the closest of friends could execute properly. Brendan and Jimmy are tired of being disrespected and depreciated by students at their school. Brendan and Jimmy are firm admirers of Colombine and Virginia Tech.

Brendan stands six feet tall and is well built, weighing in at just over one hundred and seventy-five pounds. Brendan has dark brown hair and deep, glazed hazel eyes. His cheeks tilt inwards and he has a face that appears drenched with sadness, even when he smiles. His teeth are crooked and he normally can be found wearing a sleeveless white shirt and tattered, faded blue jeans. Brendan lives with his gun-happy father who divorced his “whore of a mother” five years ago. Brendan’s dad, an avid hunter and gun enthusiast has taken Brendan out to various shooting ranges. Brendan, like his dad, is incredibly apt with guns and could hit a target while blindfolded from over twenty yards away. Brendan’s grandfather, a gun enthusiast like Brendan’s father, has a basement stocked full of guns and ammunition, due to the fact that his senile grandfather still fears an invasion by the “commies.”

Jimmy stands just over five foot four. He’s a weakling and weighs in at just over one hundred and ten pounds. He appears gaunt and malnourished. His cheeks are a pallid yellow at times and his skin is a very pale white. Unlike Brendan, Jimmy has never touched a gun before in his life. He lives only with his mom in a small two-story house, as his dad died from lung cancer seven years ago, when Jimmy was only eight years old. Jimmy’s mom is a heavy smoker, just like his dad was. Jimmy hates cigarettes and despite his loner status in high school and the fact that many students in his grade believe he’s a “druggie,” he’s completely straight edge, refusing every opportunity to drink, smoke or shoot up that’s presented to him.

Brendan won’t touch hard drugs, but unlike Jimmy, he smokes nearly a pack a day and drinks heavily. Jimmy is an A and B student in school, taking all honors classes. Brendan is a straight-D student taking all remedial classes. Brendan isn’t very bright, but his dad, who’s ex-military, has brought Brendan up to be well-disciplined and attentive. Brendan has been raised to be a military man himself and has aspirations of joining the Marine Corps after high school. Jimmy has aspirations of attending a small town college on the opposite side of the country after graduating, just so he can get away from the pressure and social humidity of his current hometown.

Their plan is simple: Sneak into the school from entrances on opposite sides of the main building and shoot-on-sight. Brendan is the one who persuaded Jimmy to join him and Brendan is the one who has provided himself and Jimmy with the “firepower necessary to wreak havoc.” Jimmy is the mastermind behind the plan for what will go on inside the school. He is the one who came up with the idea of each of them entering from opposite sides and then meeting up in the center of the school at the cafeteria on the first floor. Jimmy also persuaded Brendan that they should cut the power to a certain section of the building. In addition, Jimmy concocted a homemade explosive device that he placed in a garbage can in the cafeteria to be remotely detonated once the two of them encroached upon that territory. Brendan, taking Jimmy’s advice, also cut communication lines nearby so the school would be unable to contact local law enforcement. Jimmy also aided the communication interference by developing a device that would broadcast a sound wave on the same frequency as the PA system that would effectively negate any attempts to warn students and faculty in the school that there is an intruder in the building. Jimmy also placed another homemade explosive device in a garbage can inside the camera room, a room in which a security officer monitored all of the school’s cameras, of which there were two to three in each hallway.

Brendan, armed with a TAR-21 assault rifle, a butterfly knife, a sawed off shotgun and a Smith and Wesson pistol, took the west side entrance. Jimmy, armed with only a M249 light machine gun and several smoke grenades, took the east side entrance. Brendan and Jimmy have walkie talkies for keeping in touch and ski masks to prevent anyone from taking note of their true identity. Both are dressed in black nylon shirts with heavy black sweaters and black sweatpants, as well as all-black converse shoes. They’re also touting black leather gloves and Brendan has a holster on his right side for his Smith and Wesson and another holster on his left side where he has his butterfly knife concealed. He has the sawed off shotgun concealed in the belt of his pants, under the back of his shirt. He carries his TAR-21 assault rifle casually and takes care to not make any unnecessary noise upon entering the building. Jimmy on the other hand, carries his M249 light machine gun, a rather heavy gun, shakily and very unsteadily. His smoke grenades are attached to a special brown belt he’s wearing and he has a switchblade concealed in a secret compartment in his right shoe. He enters the building overcome by nerves and anxiety and nearly drops his gun upon taking cover against a wall nearby the entrance he passed through.

Upon entering the building, Brendan radios to Jimmy to set off the explosive device inside the camera room. Jimmy listens and the plan goes into play. The time is 8:24 A.M., twenty-four minutes into the school day. The bomb, made to be silent but deadly, goes off, killing the security officer in the camera room and taking out most of the monitors as well. Jimmy begins silently strafing through the hallway with the intention of checking his work on the camera room, while Brendan begins his slow journey to the cafeteria.

Jimmy walks carefully, gradually maneuvering his way through the empty halls. He is on the far east side of the building on the first floor and needs to get toward the center of the building on the second floor. Looking nervously from side to side Jimmy gradually perambulates down the hallway. Just several steps away from the staircase he notices a girl exit a classroom and begin heading in his direction.

“Brendan, what do I do?” Jimmy radios to Brendan in almost the same instant which the girl begins walking toward Jimmy.

“What do you mean what do you do?” Brendan answers back in a loud whisper.

“I mean, there’s a girl, she’s headed in my direction. She hasn’t looked up yet, but if she sees me… What do I do?”

“Man up and shoot the bitch. It’ll just take one shot to the head. Hold the gun steady and fire. Just like I showed you when my dad took us to the shooting range on Sunday. I know you’re a terrible shot, but come on, just aim for her head. You can do it.”

“Al—alright. I’ll—I’ll do it,” says Jimmy in a dead whisper to Brendan through his walkie talkie. Jimmy pulls open the door to the staircase and hides behind it. Upon swinging the door open the girl looks up and stares bewildered at the open door with nobody near it. She begins to walk toward the door, and just as she does, Jimmy pulls the trigger on his M249 light machine gun and hits her square in the chest, sending her flying backward onto the ground. The sound from the powerful light machine gun causes several nearby classrooms to permeate with shouts of astonishment. Jimmy shoots up the stairs in response and shouts through his walkie talkie to Brendan, “Shit, they’re breaking into hysteria. What do we do Brendan?”

“Forget about the camera room. I’m almost certain you fucked with the monitors and took that guy out. We’d be fucked if you didn’t. Just get to the cafeteria. Shoot anyone who gets in your way. Alright?” answers Brendan, in a haughty, almost annoyed voice.

“Okay,” says Jimmy in a tremulous state. Jimmy carefully walks back down the stairs and sees a small crowd around the girl he just shot. He points his gun at the crowd just as he opens the stairwell door and fires into it, spraying bullets everywhere. He sees two boys and one girl fall and sees several other students and a teacher scatter in all directions. Jimmy responds by firing several more rounds at those choosing to flee and then sprints in the opposite direction, toward the cafeteria. Just in this moment a good portion of the school takes in what sounds like machine gun fire. The entire first floor of the school building grows silent as Jimmy runs faster than he has ever ran before in an effort to reach the cafeteria and meet up with his partner-in-crime, Brendan.

While Jimmy sprints through the main hallway in an effort to reach the cafeteria, Brendan finds himself in his own little predicament. A group of teachers have gathered out in the hallway trying to identify the origin of the strange sounds coming from the east side of the building and are looking around with anticipation. Brendan finally gives up on waiting for them to return to their respective classrooms and pulls out his sawed off shotgun from beneath his shirt. He stealthily approaches the teacher closest to him before shooting her in the head. He proceeds to shoot the three other teachers, one male and two females, in the chest, killing each with one shot. Brendan’s shotgun makes a loud noise attracting a lot of attention in the nearby classrooms, prompting Brendan to conceal his shotgun again and to pull out his high-powered TAR-21 assault rifle. He begins to sprint down the hallway with the intention of meeting Jimmy at the cafeteria as well.

“Are you here yet?” whispers Jimmy into his walkie talkie upon nearing the cafeteria’s far east door.

“Almost. Set off the bomb if you’re there,” responds Brendan.

“Alright,” says Jimmy as he presses a red button on a black remote he has. Just as he does, a large “boom” can be heard from inside the cafeteria, followed by several screams and a mass of students running aimlessly and fearfully out of the cafeteria.

Just as the hysteria breaks out, Brendan reaches the far west side of the cafeteria. Both boys open fire on their fellow students. They begin dropping like flies, until all of a sudden, Brendan hears the light machine gun fire on the opposite side of the hallway stop. Brendan fears that someone may have disarmed Jimmy and so he sprays bullets ubiquitously out in front of him while traversing the halls around the cafeteria in an effort to get to the far east side. Upon reaching the far east side Brendan sees a shocking sight.

“What the fuck?” shouts Brendan upon seeing Jimmy, with his M249 light machine gun in hand, curled up in a ball in the corner, a pile of dead students and at least one dead teacher sprawled out in front of him.
“Look what we’ve done,” says Jimmy, cowering and shaking on the floor.

“Yeah, these motherfuckers deserved it,” responds Brendan, staring furiously at Jimmy.

“Look out!” shouts Jimmy, as tears jerk from his eyes.

“What the—“ says Brendan upon turning around and almost getting his by a chair that a student was carrying over his head. Upon the student missing, Brendan pulls out his butterfly knife and slashes his assailant’s throat, following up by stabbing him in the chest. “Fucker’s dead,” he gleefully voiced.

“See. You like this shit Brendan. I don’t like this killing shit. I don’t like the people here, but I don’t like this killing shit.”

“What’s your problem? You a pussy?” exclaims Brendan, cringing.

“No. I just don’t like killing people.”

“It’s too late to turn back now, dumbass,” exclaims Brendan, rolling his eyes. Brendan proceeds to turn away and heads toward a nearby stairwell to go upstairs and wreak more havoc, but just as he does, Jimmy points his M249 light machine gun at Brendan’s head and fires.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” screams Brendan as Jimmy misses. Jimmy doesn’t respond and simply turns away, opening the cafeteria door and heading inside. “You’re going to die motherfucker! You hear me!”

Brendan follows suit and bursts through the cafeteria door before it even manages to fully close. He tears it open so forcefully the hinges rattle and almost break. “Where the fuck are you motherfucker?” shouts Brendan upon noticing that the lights in the cafeteria are out. He proceeds to whisper to himself, “Why didn’t I bring my dad’s night vision goggles!”

Brendan hears a burst of machine gun fire and takes cover under a table. He sees a table overturned and decides that must be where Jimmy is hiding behind. Brendan opens fire with his TAR-21 assault rifle and puts several holes in the table. His suspicions that Jimmy is hiding there are confirmed when Jimmy throws a smoke grenade down near himself to make visibility even more difficult for Brendan.

“Damn it, you asshole! We coulda been a great team! Look at what you’re doing here! You’re gonna get us both killed!” shouts Brendan swinging his head from side to side trying to get a glimpse of Jimmy or anyone else alive in the cafeteria.

Upon seeing a figure running through the center of the cafeteria Brendan opens fire with his assault rifle and the figure goes down. “Gotcha fucker!” he shouts, but just as he does, Jimmy opens fire on him again. “Damn it!”

Jimmy now strafes from one side of the table he’s hiding behind to the other, and proceeds to toss an improvised incendiary device that he brought with him, unbeknownst to Brendan. The device goes off just a foot away from Brendan and a small fire erupts in on the cafeteria floor. The table under which Brendan was hiding catches fire as Brendan sprints to the other side of the cafeteria.
“You might be right about both of us dying,” shouts Jimmy, almost no emotion in his voice. Jimmy begins firing the second Brendan begins sprinting and a round from his M249 hits Brendan in the back, propelling him forward, face first into the ground.

Jimmy darts toward the downed Brendan and points his gun at Brendan’s head upon reaching his prone body. “This was a stupid idea, and now you’re going to die for messing up my life. I could’ve made it to Harvard. But I listened to you and now my life is over. And it’s all your fucking fault,” shouts Jimmy, pressing the barrel of his gun up against Brendan’s head. “You hear me?” screams Jimmy upon getting no response from Brendan.

Jimmy then realizes, in his flurry of emotions, that Brendan might be dead. He removes the barrel of his gun from Brendan’s head and goes in to feel for a pulse. Just as he does, Brendan rolls over and embeds his butterfly knife in Jimmy’s side. Jimmy gasps and keels over just as he’s stabbed. Brendan pulls out his Smith and Wesson and points it at Jimmy’s head, demanding “you better fucking be ready to die. Because you’re about to die right now asshole!”

Just as Brendan goes to pull the trigger, a bullet hits him in the side and he goes down. The lights come on in the cafeteria and a SWAT team surrounds the two gunmen. The leader of the SWAT team heads over toward Jimmy who exclaims “I’m not hostile! I’m not hostile!”

“I believe you, boy, but you fucked up big time if you did any of that shooting out there. There are at least thirty something dead bodies, students and teachers alike, out in those halls. People are gonna want your head, son,” said the SWAT leader, in a tone that hinted shame.

“No. This can’t be. I wasn’t—I didn’t mean to. It was all him! All his fault!” exclaims Jimmy pointing at Brendan, who is still lying on the ground.

“Sir, he’s dead,” says one of the SWAT team members to the leader, who is facing Jimmy at this point, simply nodding his head as if he’s sorry.

“Damn. Well, that takes care of one of them, but there’s still this one,” says the SWAT leader facing Jimmy.

“Wha—?” says Jimmy, just as the SWAT team leader pulls out his pistol and puts a bullet in Jimmy’s head.

“That takes care of that. Let’s go men,” says the SWAT leader, as they drag the two bodies out of the cafeteria and head for the nearest exit, ready to file a report stating that the two hostiles engaged them and began firing, and that lethal force was a necessity due to the violent nature of the two armed students and the severity of the actions they took in the school halls just minutes before the SWAT team arrived, the girl who Jimmy could’ve sworn he’d kill to begin this whole debacle having contacted 911 several minutes after Jimmy darted for the cafeteria to meet up with his one and only friend, Brendan Baker.

The ending was nice. I like *everyone dies* situations in stories.

Geeze, what are these guys? Splinter Cells? Haha, that was freakin' planned out unlike any other school shooting. Also, I didn't know SAWs could be bought legally, haha. Anyway, enough critiquing that. :P

I thought it was cool and wasn't expecting that ending. :P That's one badass SWAT officer, haha.

Very cool story, Adam. Just way too unrealistic. :P

I can`t imagine something terrible like that happening at my school, nor do I want to. That story almost brought me to tears, until the part where you made the teens look like U.S.M.C or British SAS with the advanced weaponry. Spot on though.

It's more likely it could happen anywhere then you think.
