I agree with you 100%... Dookie and Insomniac were the good ones. 21st century breakdown was a disgrace

They were, and still are, an incredibly good band. Not exactly a GREAT band, but a good band. I think Green Day now is a bit overrated in terms of fans. Now they have legions of fifth and sixth grade kids following them around and acting like 'American Idiot' is their only album.

To be honest, I think Zeppelin is an awful band. I don't get the big fascination with them...at all. I actually like Jesus Of Suburbia, it takes a progressive turn. Going into all the difference 'movements' or 'acts' if you want to call them to tell a story is a very old technique to compose a song.

They only like 'American Idiot' because it's probably the band's best selling album. That and they've only listened to the title track and think it's the entire album. You can't stop people from following what's popular.

Green Day is a great band, and, in my opinion, one of the only good bands of today. I don't like their recent music, it seems like they've lost some of their "Motivation". God I suck at puns.

But I feel like Billie, the lead singer and song writer, has done 2 opera albums in a row, maybe cause he's too scared to share his feelings with the world, or he's gotten older, but now all he does is write songs that don't have much meaning with his personal feelings.

I don't think he's scared at all. 21st Century Breakdown has a lot of lyrics relating to his early personal life. You really just have to delve into it though. The 'rock opera' genre is pretty much dead, but Green Day brought it back to an extent.

Also, lyrics don't always have to do with personal feelings. American Idiot was more a work of fiction while 21st Century Breakdown had a more personal touch from Billie added into it. That's what I get from listening anyway.

If your a 90's kid Dookie is a lot more memorable.

Dookie is a good album; however, you must look at their current fanbase. It's a much younger audience, most of which were probably 11 or 12 when American Idiot came out. Anything that came BEFORE American Idiot is ignored except for the fans who've really been around with the band since it's first few albums. Both albums are great, but you could play a song from Dookie or Insomniac to someone who's only listened to American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown and they couldn't tell if it was Green Day or not.

I became hooked on them because of thier song 21 Guns, but then as I went back and listened to thier older stuff, I realised how much they'd changed. They're still an awesome band, but they do seem to of lost some of the way they used to play.

>implying you know what true punk rock is

Seriously, they aren't as much punk rock anymore as they are a hard rock/punk combination. Although I haven't heard the broadway version of American Idiot, I think it's good that the band is exploring new avenues of genres.

Also, the most 'unpunk' thing they ever did was their song 'Good Riddance' (that's what Tre said anyway :P).

First off American Idiot isn't a "rock opera" per se because it is not divided into Acts only 21st Century Breakdown is a true rock opera. American Idiot is a concept album meaning it has more of a theme to it than a story. American Idiot is an anti-war anti-Bush album where as 21st Century is about people (Gloria and Christian) post-Bush.

Also in American Idiot is the first time where Billy Joe Armstrong writes a song about his father. So there are some personal songs on there as well as on 21st Century

Just because they made their album into a musical doesn't mean they arn't a punk band. I haven't seen the musical itself but I do know that Green Day was there for a majority of the production of the musical. The goal of the musical is to bring punk to Broadway and hopefully make Broadway fans out of Green Day fans and Green Day fans out of Broadway fans.

Green Day is an amazing band and you can't argue that. They have been around for almost 25 years. And obviously to stay around that long there music is going to have to change somewhat. Also they are different people now than they were when the firs started writing music. They were just teenagers then and now they are older. I believe they are even married (not sure though) therefore their view on certain subjects have changed.

Well I'm done for now because I'm starting to ramble but maybe i will be bakc later. . .

You have the "rock opera" and "concept album" terms mixed up. Rock operas and concept albums are one in the same, so it's a common mix up between the names. So this point is completely invalid.

Albums like "Tommy" (The Who), "Quadrophenia" (The Who), "The Wall" (Pink Floyd), "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (Genesis)...these are all concept albums/rock operas.

Regarding what the difference between "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown": You are right on "American Idiot", but are slightly wrong on "21st Century Breakdown". The latter follows the final years of the Bush presidency while the former focuses mainly on a character (with obvious multiple personalities with St. Jimmy and Whatsername) who runs away from his family and friends in pursuit of a better life. Eventually he dies in the end, but this is my conclusion and can be different to any listener.

That is actually true. I consider a rock opera as an album that has been broken up into different sections. When writing this I had forgotten about how Jesus of Suburbia can in itself be broken up into several "songs" so that could be considered an Act. The same with Homecoming.

Also I considered St. Jimmy and Jesus of Suburbia to be the same person thus the same character but had forgotten about Whatsername.

They also refused to sell 21st Century Breakdown because the band refused to censor some songs. It is a bit hypocritical. I probably won't get the game solely on the basis that all the songs advertised are from the last two albums. Granted, the last two albums have been really good, it would be nice to hear and play older songs.
