Airline passengers are facing massive disruption across the UK after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

Airports operator BAA confirmed all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be suspended from midday.

And in Scotland, authorities have already shut all their airports.

The restrictions, in accordance with international civil aviation policy, were imposed after the Met Office warned ash could clog engines.

Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.

I've heard that people in Europe were told to stay inside due to a lung cancer risk due to the volcanic fumes.

We havent been told that but I believe the airports are closed until further notice. Pretty disasterous for anyone trying to get home from their Easter holidays.

President Obama cancels his flight to Poland to the funeral of the victims of the devastating plane crash because of this.

As of last night the news said he didn't intend on canceling, but things changed overnight.

I wish I could have seen it in person.

EDIT

"Just hours after European Union transportation ministers agreed on a plan to ease restrictions on airliner traffic, the British National Air Traffic Service reported that the eruption of the volcano in Iceland has strengthened.

A statement released late Monday said a new ash cloud is heading toward Britain. It described the situation as unpredictable and changing."

This is pretty much all over Europe. Nothing you can really do.
Some businessmen in London paid something on the order of 10k £ to go from London to Geneva...

But the sky has no airplane contrails, so it looks nice for the first time in years.
