My student teacher asked the class to write a summary/comparison to one of four quotes she had written on the board. I automatically chose the longest one; "When thinking and reasoning, for whatever the reason, the life of a man naturally reverts to a mindless groping in a hostile darkness ruled by savage passions and base perversions."
Everything that is red, she underlined of circled ,or wrote herself(Followed by -'s)
We had 15 minutes to write this, no rough draft. It's straight up.
Mine was a full page (front and back) then another half page.
This is based on the book we read, 'Lord of the Flies'.

Over time, survival has changed from a way of life to an inner instinct that every form of life possesses. Humans can survive by
merely feeding off of other, but when put into a situation like the boys are in in "Lord of the Flies". instinct shows its ugly side.
-good intro.
When the boys first land on the island, theyre capable of having an organized, civilized group with a plan of rescue. As time goes on, the ability to think in an orderly manner subsides and reasoning becomes obsolete The greedy thriving that Jack acquires quickly evolves into a 'mindless groping' for power. He quickly learns that if he hides his own fears behind pain, his power becomes controlling and in turn tears apart sanity.
Facing evil by choice, such as murder, will evaporate the conscious. The boys know, in the beginning, that what Jack is doing is wrong, but eventually their wants override their needs; meat v. survival. The boys don't think of the piglets when they hunt a mothering sow, they only want the meat for themselves.
Darkness is everywheres, It's not a form of evil, it's an emotion. Everyone possesses emotion, everyone possesses anger. Even Ralph gives in to anger and put his friends lives in danger just to prove his point. When put against your opposite, you're not going to come to an agreement and shake hands. There's always a winning force. Survival is a war itself. When facing death you become inhuman over time.
Life isn't based upon reasoning. Every day life is, only because we're handed everything we need, but when that ends, thievery begins. In modern life, or on an island, if someone has something that you want, you'd do anything to have it. Jack sends his group to raid Ralph's just to get fire. Instead of just taking the fire, they also attack their shelters and the boys. Why go to such lengths? Because anger overpowers reason. When you're angry, you don't stop to think about what you're doing- you just do it.
Adrenaline is another form of power. When caught up in the moment, you either let it fade, or let it take you over. When Jack and his tribe attack Simon, at first they don't realize what they're doing but once they do they don't stop. Power. Power has the ability to turn the most sensible thinker into a power hungry drone.
Survival of the fittest isn't about who can stay alive, it's about HOW you live to stay alive. Whether you let power rule you, or you rule yourself.
-This is a great response!
Extremely well written and insightful.
* I would like to read this to the class if you don't mind.[/CENTER]
