More than 1,000 animals - mostly guinea pigs - have died after a fire at a pet breeding centre, police said.

Officers were called to a "significant fire" at the animal breeding centre in Lewdown, Okehampton, Devon, at 1.45am on Tuesday morning.

The centre is used for breeding domestic pets, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed.

A force spokesman said: "The fire has resulted in the death of over 1,000 animals, mostly believed to be guinea pigs.

"The cause of the fire has not been established and fire and police investigators are in the process of conducting investigation and inquiries."

Police said it was too early to say whether the fire at Little Cholwell, in Dippertown, was arson.

Four sheds used to house the animals are understood to have been destroyed in the blaze

I find it weird how they left "Mostly Guinea pigs" in the title as if it makes it any less important. Or that may be just my view on it. I hope to god it isn't arson, It's barbaric to think there are people out there like that.

Why would it be barbaric to think that there are people out there that set fires?

Actually what I find barbaric is that pets are bred in those conditions in the first place.

It sorta does, given they don't live that long anyway.

Not just the fire. But to think people are stupid enough to do that without thinking about the animals inside.

I agree Nick, but for someone to find cause to just do that, and knowingly cause the death of them it makes me wonder. Either someones idea of a prank, or they tried getting their point across to the 'breeders' without using their heads first. It may just be a fault or something though.

It sorta does, given they don't live that long anyway.

And yeah, i guess it just depends on individual opinions, but in mine it's still taking something's life therefore its just as important as any other animal in that place.

Would you care if 1000 goldfish died? Or spiders? A lot of people have pet spiders.

Eh, yeah i kinda would. It applies to all animals with me really. Like i said its just opinion of individuals that usually determines how you view things like that
