Cobalt Constellations

The moon acquiesced the stars’ right to shine
Past midnight and well into the early hours of the day
By shining a pale blue for the duration of its crescent phase.

The stars shone a solid, matte black that night,
Drilling holes into the navy blue foreground of the sky,
Holes so deep I swear I could see my own shadow
With glowing red eyes within the propensity of that
Ephemeral shoreline amidst the ebony rapids of space.

The stars grew blacker as the sky grew silky smooth
And the background upon which the stars had been painted
Began to sway in a wave-like motion
Until the stars intoxicated the visage with a luster
So intense the eyes could no longer tolerate the shine
And were forced to focus instead upon the moon,

The azure moon,
A perfect crescent in the half-hearted darkness
Of the night,
Shining in a fashion so unbecoming
That the cobalt constellations
Burnt out.

Ashes fled from midnight to moonlight
Across the navy blue sky,
Letting the eyes free for a moment
To catch a glimpse of the light
Escaping from the deaf stars

Landing ever so gracefully
Upon the graveled pavement
And systematically simmering
Into the ground, leaving a distinguishable
Silver sparkle
Where the light had made its impact
Just seconds after its emission
From those black star formations,
Those ever so indignant
Cobalt constellations.
