Title

“I have no idea what to write.” she says quietly to herself. She then let out a scream of frustration loud enough to wake her neighbors and the dead, set off every car alarm in a three mile radius, and shatter every window in her house. Or at least, that’s what it felt like to her. In actuality, she realizes it couldn’t have been too loud as Bella remains curled comfortably under the desk at her feet. Bella is her behemoth of a Rottweiler, who happens to think a fluttering leaf is worthy of a hunting howl. *Or maybe Bells has just gone deaf from the number of times I’ve done that to her.* she thinks wryly. Having decided that, at least for the time being, her book was going nowhere fast, she decides a little movement might do her some good. “Come along pup,” she says softly, now mindful of her volume, “Not that you’re a puppy anymore now are you?” Not a puppy indeed, Bella is already 4 years old, weighs more than 100 pounds, and is capable of taking down any human who dared to even come close to threatening “her” pack of humans.

“Honey?” Upon hearing his voice, she is overwhelmed. Only him, only the man she loved more than life itself could pack so much emotion into just one word. In his voice she heard first and foremost his love for her, that same unbridled love that she had for him, that same love which bound them together and made them one, that would lead each of them to lay down their life for the other, should the need ever arise. But love wasn’t the only thing in his voice. She also heard his compassion and sorrow at the difficult time she was having getting this book written, his annoyance and anger with himself for not being able to help her with her problem, and … weariness. *Shit!* she thinks as she pulls back the sleeve on her shirt to reveal her watch, which promptly informs her it is 4:47. Her “little” outburst must have woken him up. *He didn’t get home from work until after midnight last night, has to be back in by 8, and here I am waking him up. Way to go! Gee, maybe I’ll have him make breakfast for me too.*

“Honey, you ok down there?”

“I’m fine. Just a little frustrated. Why don’t you go back to bed? You have to be up soon enough as it is.”

“I’ll never get back to sleep knowing you’re up fighting a problem. Besides, I’m in the middle of making breakfast. How do you want your eggs?”

“Scrambled,” she says automatically. “Hey, wait a second here. You have work in a few hours. At least go pretend to go to sleep and let me make breakfast for us.”

“And let you in my kitchen unattended? I don’t think so. Remember what happened the last time?”

“It was only a little fire. Besides…”

“Besides nothing. If you’re that desperate to help, you can come up here and scramble the eggs.” he says, then adds more quietly, in a stage whisper, “What I’m doing trusting her with sharp objects I don’t know. Lord knows she is going to end up sending one of us to the hospital.”

“After a comment like that Mr. Wiseguy, you might just be headed for the hospital.”

“You can’t say I don’t have a basis for the comment.”

“Doesn’t matter. I can still hurt you for saying it out loud.”

“Promises, Promises.”

By this time, she has come upstairs from her office in the basement and snuck up behind him. Laughing, she throws her hands in front of his eyes and exclaims, “Guess who!”

“Um, um, oh I know, my expensive Sicilian mail order bride.”

Smack. She slaps him, lightly, across the face. “Watch who you’re calling Sicilian, buddy”

“I am half Sicilian, remember?”

“How could I forget? It’s not like my family ever will. But, I love you anyway.”

“Anyway because I’m Sicilian or anyway because your family will never let you forget it?”

She is caught off guard by the seriousness of the question, but the answer still rolls right off her tongue because of how true it is.

“Because you’re Sicilian. You know I’d pick you over my family in a heartbeat. Then again, some days I’d pick a giant trash eating space slug over my family so that’s not saying much.” She starts giggling again but he can’t help but notice the fact that her demeanor has shifted and so feels his best course of action is to bring this game to its conclusion.

“Then is it the most beautiful, wonderful woman in the country, who will be always and forever the love of my life?”

“No.” She giggles even harder now, in the midst of this well rehearsed and well scripted part of the game.

“I don’t believe you.” he says, as he “breaks free” of her grip enough to turn around and see her face to face.

“See, you were wrong.” she says, giggling in his face.

“So I was. It is in fact the most beautiful, wonderful woman in the world, who will be always and forever the love of my life.”

Their eyes lock and they suddenly begin to kiss, fiercely, with the passion that only two young soul mates can share. While the kiss may seem powerful, and indeed it is, it pales in comparison to the intensity of their gazes. Their eyes remain locked, seeing their partner’s soul laid bare before them, and they revel in all they see. They remain locked to each other for several minutes, until BEEP!!! BEEP!!! BEEP!!!

“Now look what you’ve made me go and do. Out of my kitchen, woman, before the entire breakfast is ruined.”

“It was only one piece of French toast…”

“And you’ve been in my kitchen all of five minutes. Now go work on your writing before my entire kitchen comes crashing down around us.”

And although he would never admit it, she could swear she heard a chuckle coming from the kitchen as she returned refreshed and renewed to her work.

*In fact, I think it’s all coming together. Now, if only I could come up with a title*

First, thanks. Story comments make me happy. :)

Second, this was written as a one shot. There are a bunch of details in my head not on paper. For example, there is a second dog owned by the family. He's upstairs asleep for the whole story. However, for the most part, what you see is what you get. Now you've given me a bit of an idea to expand. Sequel maybe in the works. We'll see.
