Hey guys and girls,
So I'm doing an assignment/presentation on what makes a good teacher, and it would be great if you could take just a minute or so to tell me what you think it means to be a "good teacher"
- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have?
- What makes a teacher "bad"?
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now?
anything to address those questions or your own opinions would be great :)
thanks heaps!
Chris.

- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have? They should be fun and helpful, even if you get an answer wrong, but although they are fun, they should not be taken as a joke, which means that they can apply authority when needed
- What makes a teacher "bad"? If they get mad at you for getting a question wrong, and if you ask for help they say "Well you should know that" despite the fact that they are teachers and are there to teach and help if someone doesnt understand.
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now? I dont know x.x

- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have?
Professional attitude; ability to maintain serious academic atmosphere in the classroom regardless of how rowdy the students usually are. Open-minded. Flexible.
- What makes a teacher "bad"?
If their teaching quality is low. As in - teaching nothing of importance in class, perhaps even not teaching much at all that the students can't learn on their own from the textbook, or failing to assist in effective learning (giving away free marks to favourable students etc). School is about learning.
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now?
Honestly, I love the teachers I have right now. And school has never been this interesting.

What makes a teacher 'bad'? Well, telling you to read a text for homework because there's a test tomorrow! And they hadn't bothered to explain it in class.

A good teacher needs to be fond of teaching and intereact well with their students. One that doesn't spoon-feed their students but helps them understand the material being thought.

- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have?
They should have a positive attitude, a definate grasp of the material, the drive to do the best they can and push their students to maximize their learning potential.
- What makes a teacher "bad"?
Teachers that doesn't care and think they deserve respect for the sole fact that they are a teacher make a teacher a poor person to learn from. They tend to have poor attitudes and I can't learn from people who can't teach. People who want to teach well will. The rest just don't try.
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now?
Teachers need to push and challenge their students to their maximum potential in order to get the most out of their time in a teacher's class.

I'll answer it in regards to my high-school teachers, not university professors.
- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have?
- Polite; have a backbone; punctual; not lament on the tiny, petty details endlessly; not sugar-coat every single thing or be politically correct about every single thing; be very knowledgeable about each lesson plan, future lesson plans and be able to answer questions that are beyond the scope of the current lesson; have tests that are fair; not spoon-feed students; be able to present the material in a way that's not simply reading from the book; include a few details not in the book either as examples or to help explain concepts; be able to have control of the classroom; know how to use lab equipment; and be a fair marker.
- What makes a teacher "bad"?
Not respecting the students, fellow teachers, parents, laws or society they're in; crude, childish or foul language being something that is common; having little knowledge about the topic being taught; making mistakes while teaching that other students frequently have to point out or explicitly contradicting the textbook without explaining why; being knowledgeable but being poor at teaching it and explaining the steps along the way; spoon-feeding students; using voices that you'd expect to use to kindergarten students (i.e. long-drawn out, exaggerated high-pitched voice); focusing on tiny, insignificant details of the course or things that students do; having little to no control over the class (great because you can do whatever you want but you don't learn anything, hence attending the teacher's class is a waste of time and money); teacher acts as though they're special for some unknown reason; teacher tries to act like the students simply to get popularity and focus more on that than teaching.
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now?
Be able to answer questions better without having to consult the textbook each time; push students academically so students can think outside the box and help those that are struggling instead of ignoring them and pushing them; give examples or do something so the method of presentation is dry, dull and boring regardless of how interesting the material is (i.e. interesting topic but presentation is dull).

What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have?
The teacher should have a good grasp of the subject and more importantly should be able to explain it well. And of course he/she should be caring towards the students.
What makes a teacher "bad"?
Disrespecting the students, not listening to the student's woes, and not able to explain the subject well
What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now?
To be more understanding about the personal problems and not be so strict about homework.

- What characteristics do you think a good teacher should have? Their lectures should be effective. They should test lots, and grade little. Keep their students on edge all the time, yet be forgiving of mistakes.
- What makes a teacher "bad"?Relying too much on students to teach themselves. Taking guesses instead of admitting that they don't know something. Not giving examples. Not forgiving mistakes. Humiliating students for their mistakes.
- What would you like teachers to do for you that they may/may not do now? Not treat us like children. We're adults. We know about drugs, cuss words, and sex. Don't be afraid to use profane words to make a point in class, and STOP FOLLOWING THE RULES. Only those that don't follow the rules will be effective.

What makes a 'good teacher' : One who is willing to help students in the parts that they need help in, one who can control a class without being mega strict and so can still make the class enjoyable whilst we are learning all that we need to. Ones that are willing to help outside of class and will actually give you help on how to improve rather than just pointing out mistakes and hoping you get it.
What makes a 'bad teacher' : One who can't control a class, one who just expects you to understand because 'its obvious'. Ones who don't actually help you in class and don't teach you what you need to know, and then expect you to do masses of homework and keep you in when you dont understand.
What I would like teachers to do/not do : I would really like them to stop reminding us that we only have thirty odd days left till GCSE's begin. Thanks teachers, I wasn't panicking until you said that!
And i would really like for my maths teacher to actually teach me, rather than doing nothing in lesson and expecting us to magically understand it and be able to do the homework.
