View Full Version : Hung Up Hibernation

This is something that's starting to piss me off lately. More than half the time I try to put the computer in hibernation (whether it be through the start menu, closing the lid, or low battery) it will just turn the screen black but it never shuts down. Basically once the screen goes black there's no way to put it back on. The computer is still actively going. I know this because if i was watching a youtube video I can still hear it playing when the screen goes black.

It does work sometimes though. But how do I get it to work every time? With how it works now in order to fix it I have to hold down the power button so it turns off completely. I prefer to hibernate my laptop though.

I use a HP G60 laptop running Windows 7.

You have to go to Control panel. and fool around with the power options.

And that will do what exactly?

There should be something in power options, well I have windows vista, so it might be different for you, but in power options, in the control panel, there is a section that says "Change what closing the lid does", or something like that, and click on that?

It is set for hibernation. The problem is that it doesn't complete the hibernation process. It does it whether I close the lid or select hibernate in the Start Menu. It will turn the screen black and it won't do anything after that.

It does work sometimes but majority of the time not.

Ant, do you have the sleep option?

This is what I have.

Also like I said when I click Hibernate in the start menu it does the same thing.

Thats strange.. Does it do the same thing if you click the sleep button? Also have you done anything to try and correct it before now?

This isn't some kind of problem that can be fixed by changing some checkbox in Windows CP, guys. What Ant is describing is essentially his computer hanging during hibernation. It happens to me as well, Ant, and I suspect keeping it from ever happening requires a very stable Windows installation. My shitty tablet that I have not reformatted in over 2 years now (no integrated optical drive so it's a pain and I'm lazy) often hangs when I try to hibernate. It sucks.

Is it possible for you to use sleep until you can get it fixed? It sounds like it needs a professional to look over it. If what David said is right that's probably the only way of really knowing what the problem is.

My dad's laptop used to do the same on Vista. The screen would fade to black but it wouldn't actually hibernate.

I suggest running windows update and see if there are any optional updates for drivers. A bad driver can often cause problems like these.
