View Full Version : Before the universe?

Following on from my 'Outside the Universe' thread I have a new question: what was there before the Universe? What theories do people have about this? I think that there was something before as you can't make something out of nothing but I have no idea what.

Something must exist, and since the universe encompasses everything, nothing could have existed before the universe. It is timeless and eternal. While the big-bang theory argues that at some point trillions of years ago all the matter in the universe was condensed in some ball or whatever (my knowledge of astrology and astrophysics is teh suck) something did exist, and therefore the universe (or some form of it) has, and always will exist.

Nothing existed. There was just an egg shaped thing floatin' about in the black space. Said egg thing had all the matter that came out when the Big Band happened.

Yeah, another question about the universe, i love how these make me think, anyway in my theory if nothing existed before the universe, then how come now the whole universe is here ?. Well in another POV if something existed what was it created from? , and what was that made from? Just countless questions adding up :D With no answer, yet :D

Who cares? That was so long ago it has no relevance in our lives now. I'd much rather study stuff now and make progress forward instead of looking where we were.

One theory states, that before the current universe, there was another universe.
Basically the way it goes is, each universe gets to a point where it's so big, that it starts to collapse on itself, after fully collapsing into a singularity, it then rebounds in another 'big bang' to create a new, fresh universe, until the new universe gets so big that it collapses, and so on.

You have a point. I was just thinking about it on the bus after school on Friday. For some reason I think a lot about these kind of things now.

yes and what was the egg floating in? how did the egg get made. Since there is such thing as infinity and the universe goes on forever and there was some theory that suggests it. There is always one number before another or after. Which means to me theres something before everything. It doesn't just appear like that. So to come back around to your point I believe there is no such thing as nothing what came before that egg? And what came before that? Nothing isn't an answer there is always something before something.

The egg was floatin' about in black space. He asked a question, and I answered with the more popular scientific theory about before the Big Bang. There are more theories, and then there is religion. Another theory, like Xbox said up there, is the multiple big bangs, where one universe explodes, creating a whole new universe.
And what I meant by nothing was the egg thing.

oh okay. I'm just confused as to the fact as where the egg came from. and define black space. where did that come from. Sorry if these are completely uneducated questions as I'm 13.

Some theories say thats where black holes take place in the universe, black holes suck all forms of energy into itself including light.

Black space. Think of the universe - all right, ya thinking? Now, imagine all those galaxies are not there. There's nothin' but black. No galaxies, no nothin'. Just black. In the midst of that black there is an egg shaped thing m'bob.

I agree with you. there was probably another universe. To add to the Big Bang Theory is the Big Crunch. Some scientists believe that once a universe gets to a certain point that it till begin to contract. what they disagree on is whether it will be instant (hence Big Crunch) or if it'll be gradual. I personly like the instant crunch better just because that idea is freakin awesome :P

When it comes to dealing with infinity, it's meaningless to say that there's always one number greater or lesser than it. For example, take two numbers, 2 and 3. Between 2 and 3 there is an infinite amount of numbers (i.e. 2.1, 2.11, 2.111 and so forth). If we say there is infinity + 1, mathematically that equals infinity because infinity itself is so large, 1 produces an insignificant change.
You're right, theoretically there is always something before something but one should keep in mind the philosophical concept of first principle, which is a statement or assumption that cannot be reduced any further. When asking about the universe's origins then, suppose I say the Big Bang Theory and Big Crunches. If you ask what came before that, then you've reached a problem because I've just stated a first principle so I can only give the same answer.

Your age on here says you're 14.
Black space is simply that, black for there is no lighting from distant galaxies or stars. If you've ever been in a house or room where it was so dark you couldn't see there was someone a few feet from you, then that's analogous to black space.
