seriously, what are some people's problems? Texting during class which the teacher is teaching? Don't they know they will get their phones taken away? Our principal made it even stricter, any teacher that sees someone texting gets an automatic detention. and people STILL text

I see people texting, and for some reason I don't tell on them ... :/ I am a bit shy and I think they will hate me for telling on them

I don't even have a phone in fact I don't even know how to text....if I had a phone the phone would not have texting

I cant stand people texting in class. Its distracting to them and me. We get an auto saturday school and loss of cell if we even have it out checking the time and get caught during the day. I only use it if I have to, and then I either do it at lunch or go to the bathroom, and I only text my mom or stepdad during school anyways, not have full-on drawn out convos during class...

I hate when people text durning class. It's usually the "popular" kids who think their so cool. Theres this one girl who I hate with a passion. I just wanna take her phone and smash it to the ground. It gets so annoying >.<

Not really, like everyone at my school does it, regardless of their social status.

I do think it's goofy, but teachers don't really do anything if they see your cellphone.

Mhm. I used to have a friend that texted her boyfriend literally every moment she had - during class, while walking in the halls, midway through a conversation - it was ridiculous. (For that and other reasons, I was genuinely glad when they broke up, she was becoming so dependent on him that it was worrisome.)

Anyway. I must admit that I am guilty of sending the occasional text during class - if I receive one, I try my best to reply to it as soon as possible. It certainly does go overboard at some point though, especially if people are having long casual conversations through text during an important lesson.

But hey, what about the people secretly going online using their iTouches and what not during class? It isn't any less excusable, really.

I do text in class. Not a lot, but I do. For us if the teacher takes it; the first time its $5 to get it back, second time its $10 to get it back, and after than you have to give it in to the office when you get to school. But most teachers don't care, and people aren't stupid enough to get caught anyway. And I always have my phone and iPod Touch on me everywhere. What else is there to do in a Spanish class when the teacher leaves and doesn't assign a sub?

Well at least in my school that's how it is.

It's disrespectful to the teacher etc etc...
Yeah it's true. When someone is talking to you, you don't whip out your phone and start texting mid conversation, do you? It's the same concept as being in class and texting. It's just plain rude.

I have done it before, though. I'm sure everyone has.

Our uni has banned mobile phones and we're only allowed them if we previously speak our lecturer and tell them that we have our cell phone on us for a reason (family issues, stuff like that.)

In my old high school you couldn't have it on campus.

If I hadn't had my cell phone on me when I crashed my motorcycle my family wouldn't have been notified and I just wouldn't have shown up at home. Yes I txted in class all the time. I knew everything I needed to and the teachers didn't teach anything new. It was that or sleep.

I don't text in class, but my phone is always on. Ours are supposed to be "off", but that is never the case for anyone. Teachers at my school just say, "put it away." But I mean, there are probably some teachers who take them up like they did at my middle school. Some coaches text in class, sometimes. Some teachers don't care while you're not doing anything important in class, i.e. not learning. I had a teacher last semester who would text when our notes were done and we were working on projects and stuff. All depends on the teacher.

I used to all the time, my old school never cared, they just said "hand it over" and people got their phone back after class. However, at my new school, my phone was in my locker, off, in my bag...they did a locker check and it got taken away... Now I leave my phone at home..Next week when I start homeschooling, I'll just leave it in my room.

i think in some cases it's an addiction

in other cases it's a lack of respect and/or motivation

and for some it's a case of the learning material not being stimulating....can only pretend like some of the info they "teach" is useful for so long before i just don't care and whip out my cell

not to brag or whatever, after reading your responses, IM GLAD I GO TO THE SCHOOL I GO TO! texting in class is such an easy getaway. except for the teachers who really look out. my 8th period class, my teacher always lets us have our phones and ipods out. its awesome as hell, and everyone still gets their job DONE! in lunch we are not allowed to text, i still do it. theres one teacher in my lunch pd, he doesnt even care. you can be texting right in front of him and he wont even do anything to tell you to stop. but if he sees like the principal or the VP, then he will say put it away. lol. he is so fucking awesome. even in gym you can be texting and not even get caught. my 6th pd science teacher, if he sees a phone out, he says put it away. he doesnt take it, write you up, or anything. the next time you have it out, he wont even say or do anything. lol. im sorry, but your schools seem to be way to strict. an auto detention for texting, you have to PAY for you phone back. fuck that. there isnt any way am i going to pay fucking 5 buck to get my phone back. i just tell my mom, she calls the school to complain, bada-bing bada-boom i have it back the next day. (i would tell my mom that AFTER i confronted the teacher and told the principal myself. lol. moms cant always fight your battles. lol) really, i hate to brag but your schools are way to strict.

I ocassionally text during class but I still pay attention the only class I don't like is 4th period. Social Studies which isn't the subject that makes it boring but that the teacher doesn't know how to control her class at all so it is always fights etc... I text during lunch too which is definatly not disrespectful and everyone's all telling me to my put my phone away that I'm going to get it taken away. Which is ridiculous I'm at lunch really dumb...

I don't unless it's extremely important, which is extremely rare. Even then I ask to go to the bathroom, send the quick text and leave it be.

Highfive for not having a phone! lol :P
I vote calling is WAY better than texting :-)

i dont normally text in class, but if the text is important enough, then i might send one quickly, but that's very rarely, and it's only ever in a lesson that isn't really that important (to me anyway). it annoys me when people text constantly in lesson though. i think the last time i texted in a lesson, it was last period, and i had to text my mum and tell her that i didn't have enough money for a bus, and if she could come and pick me up instead. but that's about it really :)

i and many others are well aware of the consequences which include:

detention
taking away cell phone
and missing out on important class information

well this explains a lot

....there are hundreds of other ways to not pay attention in class

edit: btw what about texting makes it so distracting? when most ppl text in class they try not to be that visible... do calculators in math classes distract you as well?

If someone told on me, I'd definitely hate them. At my school, teachers take your phones if they catch you. Those are the key words....IF THEY CATCH YOU. (; I text in class whenever I can get away with it. But we never would tell on another student. I know people have seen me text and I've seen others text, but I act like I don't see. That's just wrong...you don't do that to somebody.

It doesn't really bother except when we're taking tests and you hear phone vibrators going off making you loose concentration.

Texting in class is a sign of the times... before it used to be little notes going around the class, now that bothered me more.

I usually text in most classes. I used to blind text when I had a phone with a keypad. Now I have a touchscreen I just lie it under a book and text. It doesn't really distract me from my work. Never been caught either :P

I check my phone when I notice I get texts (I have my phone set to silent, vibrate is too loud) but I don't respond to them unless it's really important. I remember one time I got a text from my mom asking me where I put her keys because she had to get to the airport before she missed her flight and I just happened to notice my phone's LED blinking so I could respond. :P

Usually I feel my phone vibrate in class... I just leave it be until class is over to look at it. Or I just wait till lunch. But if it's after lunch, I look after I'm dressed and out of the locker room... there's a lot of ways to put this. xD

Everyone does it at my school too.

My school has a policy that if your caught doing it you lose your phone for the rest of the day from the teacher that confiscated it. If your caught again you collect it at the end of day from the head teacher. And if your caught again your parents collect it from the head teacher at the end of the week, or the parents can call up and collect it early if they feel you need to have your mobile back early.

I do it occasionally like when we're watching a DVD etc. but only if its something to do with work or something urgent. Like I don't sit and text my mates, thats just silly.

Haha My school has a policy of
If you get caught , then the Teacher or person who saw you texting Takes it from you.
It gets sent to the main office with other phones.
And then , you HAVE too bring your parents one day with a $20 fine.
If you don't bring either, then you don't get your phone. :P

But we still text, myself inculded, all the time. But we managed to keep spare crappy phones to switch out before they would notice. xD Who wants to bring their parents , much less the the FINE xD

I seldom text in class, or in school at all really. We are allowed to have phones on us (no other 'electrical devices'), but we are suppose to have it off. (I keep mine on.) I really can't see how the school administration could think that students really won't be tempted to text during class time. It's like giving a pothead some weed and telling him not to smoke it.

I personally could care less if somebody else wants to waste their time texting instead of learning. It in no way distracts or angers me.

Well I think that you shouldnt really bother about it, its not you getting into trouble its them so if they want to get into bother let them.

I text during class sometimes. If someone is trying to talk to me who am I to tell them no? However if I know how to be discreet about it and still pay attention to the teacher.
Unlike others have said I don't think I'm "cool" for texting in class. I just find it necessary.

If the class is boring enough then I'll reply to people. I don't start a new conversation, but I often feel guilty if I don't reply. Of course, I still pay attention.

Other than that, I use my phone to check the time in class because I don't have a good watch.
