View Full Version : A very important proposition

I'm never on this section because I have never personally had any temptation to cut. However I was watching the news today and there was a report about SH. Whether you mean it or not, anyone could come on this site read your threads and find out methods of SH. My proposition is this. By all means write blogs and threads about your problems and addictions, however don't detail any methods you used or the amount of damage inflicted. I think there should be more censoring of the threads too. I am aware that people who generally have a need to SH will regardless of measures taken but what is increasingly worrying is all the emo wannabes think it's cool to SH and do go on sites like this to look for ways to try it. If everyone who posts on this section doesn't detail the actual act, but rather the feelings and causes, then i think this will help with stopping some SH. What's your thoughts?

i think the rules are the way they are for a reason. people say what needs to be said.

Tbh i think how they did it is completely irrelevant and should be kept as vague as possible for impressionable minds sake. What is helpful is to express why they did it and how they felt before, during and after. Not the method they used, that could encourage/inspire wannabe SHs .

The problem with increased censorship of content is that there are times when people have questions that cannot be properly asked without divulging some extent of detail, for example when inquiring about adequate treatment of self-injury wounds. Also, one's emotional response to an act may also be connected directly to what it involved.

Everyone who visits this section should be acknowledging the possibility of encountering potentially triggering and unpleasant ideas. We make it very clear as a community that self-harm is not endorsed here, and as with any other resource, it is up to the user to use the information on this forum responsibly. You've even mentioned it yourself - if someone is intent on finding methods, there are hundred of websites for that. If one such 'emo wannabe' stumbles across this site, it is much better to have them read responses that highly discourage the act and open their minds up to the reality of the issue, rather than wander off to somewhere that does openly encourage self-harm.

Just my personal opinion. Your concerns are valid, but I don't believe that more limitations is the best way to go.

i can see why you think they should be censored, but if people who do self harm are limited to the what they can say, then that might make them feel that they cant speak up about their feelings or anything on the one site where everyone understands what they are going through. i mean, i know they dont have to post how they do it, but if they were looking for a way to treat wounds on this site, then it is perfectly relevent.

like krezlyn has said, its better that an "emo wannabe" finds this sight, even of it does have the methods of self harm posted, than some website that promotes the act. this site is full of posts with negative veiws on self harm, with people saying the effects of it, which might actually put them off it. plus, if they couldn't find anything on this sight, they WILL on another site, so either way, they are going to find a method, its just better for them to know the effects, which this site would tell them.

this is just my opinion though :)

Not sure if this may be related to the thread I posted, but just like wannabe anorexics/bulimics, they will end up finding ways to do it in the end.
We can't censor every site, and we should be allowed to have free of speech, and talk about our own shit, without worrying about the wannabe's.
If they don't find it here, they'll find it on another site.

To be honest, Although I can see your point, If a person feels comfortable enough to come on here and ask for help or advice they should be allowed to say what method they use, because it can sometimes be more informative and they can receive the right sort of help from people that have been through the experience before. You can't protect everyone from methods of self harm, their going to find out about it one way or another.

i see where you are coming from, but what about the response that comes iwth it. for example i did this ......blah...blah... a wannabe emo reads it, and is like hmmm sounds kool O_o then scrolls down, or read rest, mom found out,... lost best friend, lost boyfriend, scars last forever, it won't stop bleeding what do i do? see what i'm getting at? the problms that come with it. people desribe it and their problems iwht it, and the response who encourges agaisnt it SH. I think what we have is fine, no need for more censorship.
