What is the appeal in drugs and smoking? I dont understand why anyone would want to do that to themselves after knowing what it will actually do to you. Could anyone shed any light on this please?

Excitement, that rush, to forget about something that happened in the past, or just because.
The reason can vary greatly.

That's precisely why lots of people do it. What many drugs "will actually do to you" is, in many cases of moderate use, very little.

I used and would still use cannabis as I believe it is a very safe drug when used in moderation. The two principal reasons why I used it are as follows: 1) conciousness expansion 2) I enjoyed the effects of it and I like the feeling of being high / stoned / under the influence.
Out of interest, @OP, I'm assuming you would happily take prescription drugs (legal drugs) but you're seemingly very anti illicit drugs - is this purely because they're illegal or do you believe drugs like cannabis are dangerous? Also, in terms of drugs like cannabis / magic mushrooms, have you ever performed any personal research (the internet, books) into the effects of them or do you just assume that they are bad because they are illegal?

Yes i just mean illegal drugs. I believe that some drugs are dangerous, heroin, LSD and the like. I know that cannabis and magic mushrooms are considered safe drugs, but i just dont see the point in it. I know it probably feels good at the time, but i think that it may have a negative impact on life later on. Life is what it is and while, at the time, drugs can enhance it for a short time, they can ruin it for even longer.

Some do it to have fun. Some do it too forget. Some to relax.

Some do it for fun, others do it for a way to cope with things, and it's also appealing because of the excitement and the buzz it causes. Depending on the situation it could also be peer pressure as well. Not forgetting the addiction caused by it as well. Even the illegal ones. And once you're hooked its incredibly hard to stop, and not many would be willing to accept they actually have a problem or are likely to want to receive help for it.

there is no one reason or answer. some people do it for the rush. or cuz they are depressed. or they wanna run away from something. some do it cuz they are already addicted. some do it cuz it sounds "cool". in the end, people just do it cuz they do it.

I just meant the appeal to start using them. If you know they are going to get you hooked, why do it. I see why depression causes people to start, but i still find that strange since a lot of drugs make you more depressed.

Ever heard of Uppers? Some people think of a stimulant as something that can boost your mood up. Although, after it wear's off, depression kicks in, and that's how an addiction can usually start.

I personally don't see any appeal to it, I find it disgusting actually. Thats just me though. I gather that people do it for all sorts of reasons... experimentation, peer pressure...

Society portrays drug users as creatures, not people. They're seen as desperate addicts who will casually go to extreme lengths to feed their habit, such as crime. Drugs are a big topic when it comes to prisons, too. It can be responsible for a lot of violence, both in and out of jail. It's a big factor in the criminal underworld, and the effects that drugs have on people can very easily get evaluated negatively. Disease and death amongst other side effects are mentioned when talking about drugs. What do all of these things have in common? They're considered very negative.
Legal drugs? Not considered negative at all. Even though every drug in the world has side effects, these aren't seen as bad as they're here to help you with good intentions.
I don't know the appeal in drugs, it's an individual thing. I feel like I haven't been able to quite summarise my post, what I'm trying to write is, what's the appeal in drugs?
As I haven't been able to come to a conclusion, for myself, I do not know.

Yes i have heard of uppers or "Stimulants" but, that still doesnt appeal to me, and im still puzzled as to why anyone would want to put themselves through the agony of quitting, and if they dont, probably a lower life expectancy.

You will probably never know the right answer to this because you have never been on drugs.

The only way to truly know why someone would do something like drugs is to have experienced it yourself and even then you only can speak for yourself. I think that the reasons that have been listed are all valid but i think that which gives yoou the final shove to say I WILL take them is different for everyone and you will never really know what that is
