View Full Version : Lesbian teen date request causes school to cancel prom

JACKSON, Miss. – An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.
Constance McMillen said she didn't want to go back the day after the Itawamba County school board's decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates, teachers and school officials.
"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."
The district announced Wednesday it wouldn't host the April 2 prom. The decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union told officials a policy banning same-sex prom dates violated students' rights. The ACLU said the district not letting McMillen wear a tuxedo violated her free expression rights.
McMillen said she felt some hostility toward her on the Itawamba County Agricultural High School campus.
"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'" McMillen said.
The school board issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."
The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by the AP if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.
"I guess they would rather do that than what's right, what's constitutionally correct," McMillen said.
Same-sex prom dates and cross-dressing are new issues for many high schools around the country, said Daryl Presgraves, a spokesman for GLSEN: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, a Washington-based advocacy group.
"A lot of schools actually react rather than do the research and find out what the rights of these students are," said Presgraves, who was preparing to facilitate a discussion about anti-gay bullying at a National Association of Secondary School Principals meeting.
The school district had said it hoped a privately sponsored prom could be held. McMillen said if that happens, she's sure she'll be excluded.
"It's a small town in Mississippi, and it's run by an older generation with money. Most of them are more conservative and they don't agree with it," she said.
Fulton Mayor Paul Walker said he supports the school district's decision.
"I think the community as a whole is probably in support of the school district," Walker said of the town of about 4,000.
The mayor said he didn't know of any private efforts to host the prom.
Presgraves said his organization hears about school districts that prohibit same-sex prom dates and gay-straight alliance clubs at schools. He said those kind of policies are detrimental to gay students.
"It sends a message that these students shouldn't be treated the same," Presgraves said.

Sure, let's have the school get into the personal lives, relationships, and sexualities of their students. Should work!

So she should be proud of who she is, everyone should be. I hate how homophobic and discriminatory some schools are, yet they say they teach fairness and equality? I don't think so.

It's not the school, it was pressure from the ACLU that caused them to cancel. If you ask me, the only fault the school should have is that they decided to cave in. So instead of giving the seniors one last big night of fun, they cancel it JUST because some agency doesn't like the decision of ONE person. Another thing I hate is how that they would have to enter in separately and be asked to leave if anyone was "uncomfortable" with their presence.

My mistake, just change the word school to ACLU and my first argument makes sense still :P. But i do find it wrong, i think it should be the other way around. If another has a problem with their presence they should be the ones leaving.

Just thought i'd statr this but its the district that was putting the pressure on, not the ACLU.

That's not what I read from the article. The ACLU pointed out to the school board that hosting a prom at which a female lesbian student was banned from expressing herself would be unconstitutionally violating her equality rights. Instead of remedying that the reasonable way by letting her attend, the school instead chose to cancel the entire thing rather than allow her to attend at all. Bigotry at its finest. And as if she fucking ruined it for the other students. That fault rests squarely upon the shoulders of the schoolboard administrators.

Hurr durr, GTFO before you get attacked by gay people, is all I can say to you.
His/her post proves the point of the article. There is still bigotry and that school is a buncha rednecks. If I was her, I'd be pissed, and there will probably be a lot more attention towards that school now from gay people and stuff.

Once again, hard core Christianity at it's finest. Take the time to consider that not everybody has to be "righteous" in order to be a good person. If you knew any gay, lesbian, or bisexual people, I have a feeling you'd say that to them. Because God knows everyone who doesn't like chasing tail and ass is just flat out evil.

And calling gays "unrighteous" isn't bashing? It truly is people like you, who completely contradict our own religion, that makes me ashamed on part to be a Christian. Hard core God fan-boys such as you do nothing but preach that God loves everyone, teaches us that we should do the same, and turn your back on someone because they're gay or lesbian. Not to mention that the religion contradicts itself...
Anyway, let's not get excessive trolling in this thread as Dave has already said. If you have an opinion, that's fine, but don't expect people to not go against that opinion. And if you're going to respond by calling me some "fag sympathizer" or "blasphemer", go right ahead because you're doing God's work.

Im going to give my honest opinion on the subject.
The girl should have just gone with a male. It would have avoided all the trouble and she doesn't have to spend thw whole night with him, she can go off with her girlfriend for most of the night.
It's the policy that there be no same sex couples: get over it, girl. It's the policy, and it's unfair but thats the way things are. Now, because of your tantrum there's a whole load of trouble which could have been avoided if you had just grown up and accepted that you weren't gona get your way because its the policy.

Even though the policy is prejudice against same sex couples? Just because it's a policy it doesn't make it right. She was right to stand up for that and it would have been easier for the school to say yes. What's wrong with one chick in a suit going with another chick in a dress?

It might seem like a small thing to you but to her and to other homosexuals and lesbians it's more of not being able to be yourself at your own prom. She shouldn't have to try and please everyone one else and keep shut about it if she thinks it's wrong she should do something. If the school district can't allow same sex couple at prom then they shouldn't allow opposite sex couples there either. Either you give everyone the right or you take it away from everyone.

Theres right and wrong in everything. The issue here is gay rights, i personally think she should have just left it but of course you think she was right to fight. On the whole, it's nothing major for gay rights. She's suffering at school because she's being riddiculed for it. Of course, it was VERY brave of her to stand up for herself - I don't think I could do it, myself. The issue has both rights and wrongs.

Now, because of your tantrum there's a whole load of trouble which could have been avoided if you had just grown up and accepted that you weren't gona get your way because its the policy.
1. She's lesbian. How does it make sense for her to go out with a male? If she felt the need to take her girlfriend to the prom, then she had every right.
2. Just because it's a policy, doesn't make it right. Policies do nothing but further the insecurities people have for something they don't like. In this case, it's a lesbian couple.
3. She has no growing up to do. She's a big girl, she can make her own decisions and do what she wants. Putting people with free choice under rules only furthers the need for them to do what they want.
No, i just think she's caused more trouble than it's worth when it could have been avoided. I'm not saying theres ANYTHING wrong with homosexuals, I myself am bi, but it really is a small issue compared to everything else in the world. And I don't like how you attacked me, I stated that I was giving my honest opinion, I wasn't going to hold back. My veiws on the subject are different to yours.
Bisexuals, as stated previously, are far more accepted than gays and lesbians. You being bisexual has nothing to do with this thread, nor this entire case. What does matter is that a lesbian couple wanted to go to their senior prom, were denied, and now the entire thing is canceled for it. The school could have been smart and said "We won't allow this." instead of shutting the entire operation down.
Homosexuals go through just as many trials as any other person. You can't say that one person goes through more trial and suffering than another. Homosexuality is still something that people have to get used to and it won't be easy. Homosexuals in, say, Afghanistan are pretty much treated lower than dog shit.
I'm just saying that she should have left it alone. I'm pretty sure I read she's being bullied over it - It wasn't really worth the trouble and accomplished nothing but get the whole prom cancelled.
Leave it alone and be even further afraid of asserting her homosexuality? What she did was pretty god damn ballsy for one person to do. If she's bullied over it, it just means she was successful in exciting a reaction from her peers. It WAS worth the trouble. It should serve as a reminder to those of us who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual to not be afraid to assert yourself in the world.
Right winged, am I?
You sir, are a bigot. You seemingly cannot accept any opinon that differs from your own. Stop replying to me if you only want to tear my opinon to shreads. I gave my honest opion and just because you don't agree with it, doesn't make it wrong.

LOL, yes we're all bigots for not agreeing with you. Look, if you want to get anywhere in this world, you need to accept right now that people are ALWAYS going to go against your formulated opinion - no matter how well constructed it is. People with a different opinion than your own will find a fault in it, and they will call you out on bullshit if needed. He's not ridiculing your opinion, he's simply stating his counter argument to yours. It's called debating. This is just a plain out insult thread now thanks to this little outburst.
People who don't like Obama have their reasons. Whether they be right or wrong depends on who they are giving those reasons to. This world is full of bigots, but you have completely fucked your own sense of what a bigot is and what a person with a counter opinion is. Bigots are people that flat out hate others. A person with a counter opinion is someone who actually takes the time to list the reasons as to what their own thoughts on a pertaining subject are. Until you realize that, this life will be harder for you when you get into a debate with someone. Not just on gay rights, but anything you debate.
You know what, I don't have to justify myself to you. You can reply to me and tell me Im wrong, bombard me with PM's, I don't care. Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. When you get in a debate you DO have justify yourself. You're simply being a sore loser and not conceding to defeat like you should. You're putting some type of unneeded pride when it isn't even relevant to this subject. Criticism is the passing of judgment from one person to another. However, the person receiving said criticism can judge for him/herself as to whether or not it is being rude or fair judgment. Saying for one to grow up when you have outbursts like this and the other is giving valid arguments and points is just a tiny bit hypocritical don't you think? Oh no, negative rep! Lord help whoever receives negative reputation on an online forum, because we ALL know how IMPORTANT it is to keep a reputation on the internet.

See what I did there?
