LAKE MARY, Fla. (AP) - A disabled Army veteran fatally slashed his fifth-grade son in front of neighbors and killed his wife, authorities said.
Neighbors saw Nico Duzant running in front of his home pleading for help as his father, Franklyn Duzant, 40, chased him. The father kept attacking the boy while he was on the ground and then ran into the house. Authorities later entered the home and found Duzant's wife dead, Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger told The Orlando Sentinel. No details about her death were immediately released.
Eslinger said Frankly Duzant will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Artie Bourgeois, who lives next door to the Duzants, said neighbors watching the attack yelled at Franklyn Duzant to stop.
"He then started chasing them with a machete. It's crazy," Bourgeois said.
Franklyn Duzant was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he had surgery and was listed in stable condition, Eslinger said. The reason for the surgery was unclear.
"This obviously is a terrible tragedy for not only the family, witnesses and friends of the family," Eslinger said. "We will be distributing fliers for grief counseling in the neighborhood this weekend."
Duzant was taken into custody by deputies after a standoff in 2003 where threatened to kill himself in the middle of Reflection Lake at nearby Reflection Park. He was admitted for psychiatric evaluation, Eslinger said.
