me and a few friends got onto the discussion of the iPad. it started when my friend told me, hey im getting a macbook pro for college. i said, yeah in two years. theres going to be something better out by then. and then we were making up some stuff like, oh by that time there will be a see through computer. there will be a see through iphone. on and on. my other friend mentioned the iPad. I forgot what she said and then i said, Im just going to get an iPad when i get into college. its going to be so much easier because you wont need to carry around like 6 different note books, totally portable, you can hook up a keyboard to it or just use the onscreen keyboard.

Now when i look at getting the iPad for college, i really think its going to be a lot better than a laptop. i can see myself using right now. its going to have the whole entire iWork suite in the app store for 10 bucks each, 10 bucks for pages and keynote and numbers.

Do any of you guys think that an iPad would be awesome for college than a laptop? I can just sync stuff from the ipad to a computer so i wouldnt need anything extreme. Hopefully my iBook G4 will still be good for syncing. lol.

But really. Do you think the iPad would be good for college instead of constantly buying notebooks and all? and yes i know you can use a laptop for note taking but the iPad seems so much better for that.

Easy access to the internet, and not to forget iBooks. Holy crap that will be perfect for college. Instead of going all the way to the library or bookstore, instead of carrying yet ANOTHER book, i will have instant access to what i need to read right there all in one device. I have internet, easy note taking, and books all in one device instead of carrying a book bag full of shit.

Do you think the iPad would be good for college?

I wouldn't use it for college. Having a computer or tablet in front of you during a lecture is too distracting. There's too much temptation to sidetrack yourself during a really boring lecture. Stick with old fashioned pen and paper and that will allow you to focus on the class.

i would defenitly not get one for college, one drunk night and i gaurantee someone will try use it as a snow board down a flight of stairs when you'r not looking.

Believe me I hate alcohol. Beer is fucking nasty and wine almost made me throw up. I would keep this thing protected all the time.

No, I wouldn't get an iPad. It can't do anything a computer could do better than a computer, and things like writing on a tablet get old much faster than you'd think. I have a tablet PC and haven't used the tablet functionality in a while now, just because eventually you realize that pen and paper are really the gold standard for that kind of thing.

That's the point I'm making. I DONT want a bunch of notebooks and such. If my high school allowed to bring in laptops and all, I would say "screw these notebooks. Ipad here I come. The heavy weight on my back makes me get back pains.

Yeah, you don't want them now, when the weight might be the biggest pain in the ass you regularly face. If you were to get a tablet, you'd discover that what you sacrifice probably outweighs the weight you have to cart around - which will be less anyways, since you generally have fewer classes per day in college.

But with college you don't have the same classes every day nor right after each other so you don't need to carry all your books and notepads at a time.

I would love to get one for college. But I can't.
Not because it costs to much or because I don't want it. But because, if you walk around campus with that thing, you are a twat. If you use it in class, you are a twat. If the general public knows you have one, you are a twat. That's all.

I sometimes need a laptop in front of me because i cant write all that well because of my dyslexia. My college have a system on each laptop they give out that can be watched and logged out by an admin if you're caught doing things you shouldn't be. But even so, I agree with the people here, it can be pretty distracting.

Yeah, flash games that the ipad doesn't support. Lol. And if I was playing with a game from the app store, wouldn't the teacher be wondering why I'm waving my ipad all around the place? Lol. I don't care if the ipad doesn't have flash or video chat. That's a WHOLE DIFFERENT story. Lol. And the iBooks is also another reason why I would want it for college because your going to have to go all the way to a bookstore for just one book or go to the library and have a chance there is a waiting list for that book or all the copies are out. While I'll be in iBooks, in five minutes I'll have it ready to be purchased, and in another 5 minutes it's downloaded. And that also ELIMINATES another book I have to carry. Lol. It's a lot easier in my opinion.

You can attach a keyboard to the ipad. Lol. And I'm also not good with keeping papers together. Lol. I need to fix that. I can't loose any notes with the ipad. And if I do need a notebook and pen pencil whatever, I wouldn't mind carrying one notebook just in case.

You do know that you can't buy every book online some you actually have to go find. There are games that don't require you to wave the thing around to play em so just because i might have been playing flash games it still doesn't mean you won't sit in the back of class and play other games. The best thing is to either use a school computer or just paper and pen that way you don't have a huge distraction right there waiting for you to play with it and you can focus on what the instructor is saying.

I think its not a good idea. Come on... you wanna be typing on at touch screen a lot? I think you'd be much better getting a note book or something. An iPad isnt really made for that sort of thing, I don't think. I know I wouldnt.

yeah let's all tell you how feminine it is...
And I suggest you get use to it because that's going to be the future, everything will be touch. So by that time, enjoy your outdated computer which will be useless.

And you say nothing with screens? Enjoy carrying a typewriter everywhere and all those encyclopedias while everyone else will have something better. So did you type that in the dark so no one can see how feminine you are?

He's a fanboy obviously...so he takes everything against Apple as an offense instead of fairly debating it. Personally, I would find more use in a notebook instead of an iPad. As good as it looks, I think Apple could have done better.

Standard desktop computers will ALWAYS be here. Touch screen is still a fairly new thing and not everything is going to be that way. Portability will be key, but you'll still have things like desktop computers lurking around.

And you say nothing with screens? Enjoy carrying a typewriter everywhere and all those encyclopedias while everyone else will have something better. So did you type that in the dark so no one can see how feminine you are?Students have carried books into colleges for years, centuries even. It's a standard thing. If you want to go and get the iPad, sure go ahead; but you're going to look a sight carrying the thing around. You also do realize that high products, like Apple, are stolen on a daily basis right? All you have to do is turn your back to the thing and it will be gone. Happens to a lot of people. Do you really think that college students are just going to pass something like this and not try to take it? There are so many risks involve, you need to think about t.

If you want a college "computer" or device then you should just get an actual laptop.

I think no, a laptop is better.

What is the problem with a touch screen anyway? Apple made it work flawlessly. I can almost type on my iPhone as fast as my computer. On that tiny fuckin keyboard.

You must type very slowly on your computer, then.

How the hell do you manage that?

Heres how much I suck at typing:

What I tried to type: "Hello im a fucking douche bag"

The outcome: "Hello a fucking fodjd bah"

...

If you do end up buying an iPad, you're going to have a hard time typing out all that information.

Faster than most people != fast.

The reason I say this is I type 100+ WPM at essentially all times and 120+ when I'm actually concentrating, and there is absolutely no humanly possibly way I could achieve anything close to that fast with two thumbs on a touch screen keyboard. I don't know how you could get speeds even half that fast, tbh, and I would call 40-60 WPM pretty slow.

Then, on a full size touchscreen, it would follow I would type as fast as on a normal keyboard. I don't see why everyone hates touchscreens so much.

This looks like a useless product with no market except for people with too much money or idiot Mac fanboys who will buy anything Steve Jobs poops.

-It doesn't have an SD card slot or USB slot. You want to load all your photos on it? You need to buy a special dongle and attach it to the iPad. Ah yes, that's convenient and cost-effective.

-You need to lay it flat and look straight down at it to type on it. It's not like a netbook or laptop where the keyboard is flat and the screen is in front of your face.

-You can buy a keyboard accessory -- you can spend extra money to turn a low-power netbook-type tablet into a non-portable desktop computer. Meanwhile there are products like Lenovo U1 Hybrid where you can slip the tablet into a netbook shell and turn it into a portable, foldable laptop.

-Apple wants to say it will be great for reading books and magazines, but it has a bright, glossy LCD screen. Meanwhile, electronic book reader devices use an electronic ink technology that doesn't strain the eyes and can be used in the sun.

-You cannot multitask. You can only do one task at a time. If you want to surf the web and type into a document, you can't. You need to exit one and then open the other.

-It costs $500, minimum, and has a 1 ghz processor. Products with similar specs and abilities cost less than that.

Well i must admit that it has a gorgeous big screen perfect for photos and videos but still, will you be using it for that. As it doesn't have a camera, then you will need a Camera to click some pics, and you cannot directly transfer photo to iPad without help of a additional accessory so here comes a PC/Mac as a layer in between, which will be used to transfer the pics.

Lets come to the storage. It has a 16,32 or 64GB flash storage, WOW!! but can you create a folder, or a file in there? no! . The space can be only used to sync some music , movies , ebooks , photos which you already have in your laptop, camera, media players.

Geez, it's like you guys were born with no brain. This isn't aimed at people who want complexity and ports and shit. But, no, if it's made by Apple you must hate it.

It's like circular reasoning. Why do you hate it? Apple made it. What's wrong with that. I hate Apple. lolwut?

This would be the perfect thing for my mom. She uses hardly any third party applications, doesn't download much, and doesn't play flash games. In fact, all she does is browse the web and check email and whatnot, so it's the perfect device for her. Think about who it's aimed at before you get all up in arms about Apple.

Well...Look at it's price(IPad) ... Look at some netbook. Compare prices and things they can do. Who wins? NETBOOK!

I love having a comp with me cause i can type allot faster then I can write. But my laptops more of a mobile desktop then it is a laptop..... So I usually just go fuck it and leave it at home.

My uni is built on a fucking mountain side
I go UP a minimum of 500 stairs a day, thats outside alone, nvm inside.
and my laptop weights a goddamn ton, fuuuck.

an ipad would be cool, or a lighter laptop with an actual battery life
I'm looking at a mac book pro 15" for fall
