Extra small condoms for boys as young as 12 are going on sale in Switzerland.
Called the Hotshot, the condom has been produced after government research showed 12 to14-year-olds did not use sufficient protection when having sex.
The study, conducted on behalf of the Federal Commission for Children and Youth, interviewed 1,480 people aged 10 to 20.
It showed more 12 to 14-year-olds were having sex, in comparison with the 1990s.
The Hotshot condoms, which cost 7fr60 (£4.70) for a packet of six, have been created by Lamprecht AG, a leading condom manufacturer in Switzerland.
The company has said the UK would be "top priority" if they expanded abroad, considering that it has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.
Nysse Norballe, a spokesman for the company, said: "At the moment we are only producing the Hotshot in Switzerland. But the UK is certainly a very attractive market since there is a very high rate of underage conception. The UK would definitely be top priority if we marketed abroad."
A standard condom has a diameter of 2ins (5.2cm) in comparison with the Hotshot's diameter of 1.7ins (4.5cm). Both are the same length – 7.4ins (19cm).
According to a German study of 12,970 13 to 20-year-olds, a quarter said a standard condom was too large.

i read that on ninemsn earlier today. sounds like a stupid idea really for 2 reasons. first, 12yo's should not be having sex period, and secondly, if they are they can get regular condoms because if they are doing it, their dicks should be big enough to fit in a regular one.

I think it's good, at least this way there will be less teenage pregnancies. Although 12 year olds shouldn't be having sex, they obviously are, creating a market for such a product. Plus, it's not like they're saying "hey kids, there's even smaller condoms now, go and have sex!", it's more like: "if you are going to anyway, at least do it right."

Yeah, I will by one of those things for my daughter to give it to her boyfriend. Will come in handy when they have sex. I don't want be a grandpa so soon.
Keyword: Sarcasm.
I said sorry, when I see something funny like this, I have to plunge in my thought about it.

It is more like that they are promoting teen sex. What I feel is that 12 is just too young, at least teens should resist their lust to their legal age of consent.
But as James said "if you are going to anyway, at least do it right."

Yes, clearly this is about encouraging underage sex.
No. Kids have sex, whether you like it - or it's a good idea - or not; making sure the equipment exists to ensure that they do it safely is an excellent idea. Not making these condoms wouldn't stop any underage sex.

Kids want to be dumb, we might as well let them deal with the consequences. Kids having sex at 12 is just the dumbest thing I've ever heard of....When I was 12, I wanted to hang out with my friends and play video games...never even thought about sex...Hell, I still prefer hanging out with friends to going out with some chick and having sex...even though sex is quite fun.

I don't think it's promoting sex all that much because the underage sex was happening before these condoms got produced in the first place. Perhaps it may encourage some because now they've got their proper gear to suit up and go. But, it also seems to be taking a different approach in that it acknowledges the underage kids are having sex already so instead of telling them not to, which presumably has been tried and failed, why not give them the gear so when they do engage in it, they're safe? Seems smart.

How so? They don't want the young kids to get pregnant and acknowledge the fact they're having trouble preventing them from having sex at that age. It reduces pregnancy, STDs and so forth, so it's just as "pervy" as normal condoms for adults are.

I think that this is a good idea. I've known 3 guys who conceived at either age 12 or 13, and have heard many other similar stories. It's not promoting them to go out and have sex, it's promoting them to have safe sex. Most 12 and 13 year olds are not having sex as it is, the average age around the world for loss of virginity is 17 years old. Granted if that was my child, I would not want them having sex at such an early age. But you have to be realistic, better safe than sorry. They taught us about condoms and proper usage as early as 5th grade, that's 11 years old.

how many 12 year olds have a penis 7.4" long?
seriously, if it wanted to do its job it would have to be smaller.

But you have to leave a space for the semen?
If they're already having sex I guess it's good for them to have proper protection. But I hope it doesn't encourage the smarter ones who were going to wait...

I suppose it is good that they're making it safe for kids that are having sex that young.
I don't think it should of been announced as it was though, not portraying a particularly good image for Switzerland... "Loads of 12 year old boys have sex in our country"

The length doesnt matter, if its too long you just dont fully unroll it. Its the girth that is more relevant so that they are not too lose or fall off. I was a bit surprised they weren't smaller in that way.
But you have to leave a space for the semen?
Thats nothing to do with the length of the condom, thats why they have teat ends.

It's pretty odd and weird but they are thinking really for the best interests of the kids.
Let's face it, kids have sex a LOT younger now. 10 year olds are having sex.
Society has become over sexualised and kids learn about sex a lot younger with tv and the internet. Obviously most of them are clueless as to what condoms and STD's are.
Personally I think this is a good start to helping these kids but I also think they should have sex education younger. They're having sex younger they eed to learn about the risks younger.
A little education and a condom will help kids that have sex young.

Thats a bit contradicting to their laws isnt it? The age of consent there is 16, what's the point of doing this? It's pretty much giving the go ahead to under age sex o.0 Then again, i suppose safe sex is the most important thing now, most kids do it regardless of the laws so they might as well do it safely.

If a twelve your old has a dick about seven inches, I'm pretty sure his girth is big, too.

Well, it's unlikely that a 12 year old is going to have a penis of 7". If they do then they probably do have a large-ish girth, they're designed for kids though.

Your grammar and spelling is quite good so that's not the issue I'm having. Instead, it's what you're trying to say. First, I don't see how being more technologically-advanced serves as grounds for teaching younger kids how to do things older people do, such as sex or using guns. Second, the "education is one and natural instinct is another", I don't know what your point is relative to the article. Yes those two are different and yes there should be education as well as acknowledging natural behavior but that's pretty much mentioned in the article already so I'm unsure if it's redundant or if you mean something else.
Magus

Your grammar............... something else.
Regardless of age and this is proven too.
Human will engage in sexual act regardless of age, a 2 year old male baby could do it? DID IT!. That's what I meant by natural instinct. Animalistic, aren't we.
But what I was pointing in about Education is teaching children more on the issue of sex. The benefits and danger of sex.
And the gun thing is about this.
Society has become over sexualised and kids learn about sex a lot younger with tv and the internet.
I don't see how being more technologically-advanced serves as grounds for teaching younger kids how to do things older people do

Personally, I think it's a brilliant idea. Promoting safe sex with smaller condoms. I don't think they're encouraging under-age sex at all because the kids that give into their hormones and have sex are the ones not educated enough to realize the consequences of having unsafe sex, or sex at all for that matter. They should actually have sex ed classes in grade 5 or 6 now. Just so the kids know exactly what they're getting into instead of just the pleasurable part. Luckily, you can't get pregnant before having your first period so there will never be a "6 and Pregnant" show instead of "16 and pregnant".

Yes. you can. You can get pregnant about 2-3 weeks right before when your first period would have been.
I don't see it getting below 12 And Pregnant, though
This has gotten a few young girls in trouble.

Don't be so stupid, of course its not a good idea. What part of under age parents who can't cope with or support a child and have to scronge off the taxpayer to survive sounds like a good idea, or am I just missing the good idea?
