James Bulger was murdered on Merseyside in 1993

In her first reaction to his return to custody, Denise Fergus also said on Twitter, "is this my son's justice?".

Venables, 27, was recalled to prison last week after breaching the terms of his release. He and Robert Thompson killed James on Merseyside in 1993.

The home secretary said the public had a right to know why he was returned to custody, but refused to give details.

Two-year-old James was abducted by Venables and Thompson while at the Strand shopping centre in Bootle.

His battered body was found by children playing on a freight railway line more than two miles from the shopping centre, and 200 yards from Walton Lane police station in Liverpool.

The killers were given life sentences, but released in 2001 with new identities and under certain licence conditions.

Family members said Mrs Fergus remained unaware of the nature of Venables' breach. The precise details were not released by the Ministry of Justice.

Both Thompson and Venables were given new identities when they were released. An order prohibiting the publication of details which could reveal their whereabouts has since remained in place.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said he could not reveal the reasons behind Venables' recall to custody.

"I believe the public do have a right to know and I believe they will know all the facts in due course."

Later, Justice Secretary Jack Straw said it was in the public interest that it be kept secret.

"I know there's an intense public interest in why he has been recalled," said Mr Straw.

"I would like to give that information but I'm sorry that for good reasons I can't and that's in the public interest."

He confirmed the Bulger family has not been told the reasons for the recall.

"For very good reason we have had to keep restricted details as to why Mr Venables has been recalled.

"I was however very anxious that the victim's family should know that he was being recalled before they found it out from the newspapers."

Harry Fletcher, assistant general secretary of Napo, the probation union, said Venables could have been recalled to custody under two procedures.

It could be an emergency procedure in which he would have to be charged with a serious offence, or a standard incident, perhaps involving a technicality such as a failure to keep appointments with a probation officer, Mr Fletcher said.

In an interview on BBC Radio Merseyside, Venables' solicitor at the trial, Laurence Lee, said it was a "bit early to condemn him completely until we know what he has done".

He shouldn't have been allowed a new identity in the first place. He took someone's life.. A fucking childs life, he should not be allowed to have a new one for himself. That isn't justice, that ignorance. Life sentences my fucking ass, they get better treated that half of us out here do. So.. They won't let us know why hes been recalled? Well, if anyone actually figured out who he is now, he'd be better off behind bars.

It was a sad and horrible case. I find it sad too that Venables has been recalled and it makes you wonder what he has done now. Dont know what else to say really. I'm not a "hanging & flogging" sort of person and it would be aweful for a 10 year old to be locked up for the rest of their life, but I guess some people just aren't safe to let out.

Bear in mind that he was only a child himself at the time. A child who had been very seriously abused and neglected. A child in need of help, not just punishment.

Who are we to deny a child nurture, help and support when they are so clearly sick and troubled? Who are we to deny a child the chance to grow and become better as adults? Who are we to write off a child as evil and deny possibilities of rehabilitating them?

No one is born evil and no one is completely evil so why should we treat them as such?

He'd been abused? Now this is something I didn't know. Il rethink about that. :| I would have thought though, he would have recieved counselling while he was in prison. Im curious to know why he's been put back inside though. Breeching the conditions is all i know

Something tells me the police won't tell us what conditions that were broken, I agree though - it would be interesting.

It's easy to assume the worst and get outraged that a HORRIBLE MURDERER (!!) was given a new life and now is doing HORRIBLE THINGS AGAIN.

Except, we don't know. For all we know he missed an appointment with someone and he's getting the fullest punishment for it, because of who he is. The guy's been on the streets for years, he hasn't caused problems, he's not going to stop being supervised any time soon, so I don't think it's worth the outrage.

Actually, the news already IS out as to what he did. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article7049248.ece

Got into a fight with a co-worker and was caught abusing drugs, allegedly.

Also, yes. Both Jon Venables and Robert Thompson came from very unstable, broken, and abusive families.

I wonder if the Daily Mirror's source is genuine...

Apparently that's not true, all media companies have been banned from enquiring into the case and the police aren't allowed to say anything to them, for 'fears for his safety'.

I agree with Ben. I've seen 3 different papers in the last few days. One saying its drug misuse, one assault, the other saying its child porn

Tbh, I don't think they should tell us. I mean, they wouldn't make this info public if it were anyone else and, IMO, this should not be an exception simply because of the level of interest.

Completely agree, and also if he had done anything that might require a new trial it would be essential to protect his identity and the details otherwise a fair trial would be impossible.

this just horrifies me. shocks me.That is reminiscent (though not as strong) of the feeling at the time...

The only link between the two (Jamie Bulger's murder and now) is the life sentence.
A life sentence means that after you serve your time in prison, you are free to go but are subject to being recalled into custody if you misbehave. The two incidences needn't be even remotely connected.

I stopped reading it tbh as it was clearly going for the "monsters are waiting just around the corner for unsuspecting victim" and the "look at what these evil, ferocious devils did to a blue-eyed two year old" angles.

You'd be better off reading a more objective telling of what happened.
