Had a talk from a counsellor/psychologist/english professor today who asked us all "Who needs complete silence?", nobody put up their hand and she said it was bad. That silence is the key to relaxation and helps relieve mental problems stemming from stress.

Well I disagree, personally I find myself relaxed when in a "chatty" enviroment with low-lying non-descript background noise. Who else agrees or disagrees?

When you are in a chatty environment and because of the different voices(sound voices) bump each other and the reverted sounds, you will see you are not hearing the people clearly; you will hear gibbersh. And this noise causes a subtle stroke in the ear drum and sends irregular sound signals in to the brain, by which releases some of its own brew.

The best example is a closed-inside Fish market.

Of course, you will feel safe with all around those people and what not(some aren't)

But silence will cause even more disturbance, you will sometimes hear high-pitched sound.

To some, silence is the key of relaxation.

It goes from a person to another.

My mind won't let me hear silence. It makes noise when there is none to be heard. I find I like relaxing where this is a constant stream of the same noise/tone. Like in the shower.

I like to have some soft, calm music playing in the background. Like Michael Hedges or Beethoven :P

I can't deal with silence. It drives me crazy. I'm a music person, so naturally music appeals to me. And I write with no sound around me, but even without the sound there is constantly music going through my mind.

I like to listen to calm music and concentrate on the lyrics.
Then I mix it up a bit and add a chorus; I always sing aloud.
So it's like listening to a song and coming up with your own at the same time.
It keeps me distracted and makes me feel accomplished with something.

Being in a room or an environment that is completely silent just makes me think more and more. Then my stress becomes significantly higher, and it causes me to break down.
Silence definitely isn't the answer for me.

not sure if this is a mental crisis but i either need something really loud or complete silence. gunfire and explosions work best ironically. it's just what im used to...

Actually, if you increase the value above the 80 Db value, you will only give stress on your ears, increase blood pressure and heartbeat rate, so it is not OK.

That's if you go to concert or something, but a headphone will not hurt. But if you have a cinema set and you raised quite high, it will hurt you.

I'd probably be relaxed in the first three, although I do sometimes like loud music.

^ Hey, I'm Cody too! lol ^

Ahem! Anyway, yeah I'm the same way, I actually like being in a public place only for the sound of it, not for the actual interaction (I despise that part, I wish I could be invisible), and it actually helps me concentrate to hear tons of people talking in the background.

Depends. When I am in my normal state of loneliness,I either sit in silence and stare out the window/at the ceiling or listen to some music.Still, silence is somethign I greatly enjoy, maybe because it`s something I can rarely feel.

Total silence usually makes me crazyier than normal. I have a hallucination problem, and if it's too quiet, they take over.

Either white noise, or heavy music.

I can feel relaxed in any state, it just depends on my mind set at the time. Sometimes I need complete silence, and other times I need to be in a huge crowd, or just a little bit of music.

But as a whole, we are a 'noise generation'. My junior honors English teacher always played music for us while we would read, and I remember in my AP English class, we had the choice of using our iPods during a test because the teacher knew that some people work better with some noise. And for those who needed it silent, they could go to the library to take a test. The majority were taking test in class with music on.

It really just depends on what mood im in. Sometimes i'll be more comfortable in silence, others i'd like quiet music in the background, or loud music coming from my iPod. Although, it has to be music. I hate being around large groups of people tbh.

I tend to sleep better when there's background noise. It doesn't have to be music the TV or a fan works fine. I hear things if there's complete silence. >.<

I prefer calm music when I need to feel relaxed. In fact I can't stand utter silence for even 5 minutes.

Music.

I'm relaxed when there's music in the background. It can be really loud, or really soft.

When everything is totally quiet, I go crazy. I start getting paranoid. I HAVE to have something in the background.
