I would like to ask for others opinions on this.
What do you think the purpose behind dating is? (or at least the purpose in the High-school years when there is very little chance you're going to get married.)

There actually is some purpose. Some people just end up finding someone who they truly love. Sometimes the relationships last, most of the time they don't.

I think the purpose in dating in your adult years is to meet people, and narrow in on finding true love and a potential partner for life. Dating in highschool serves a big purpose too - besides being 'a right of passage', it serves to help develop practical romantic interaction with people your age. For the most part it's unserious, full of drama and mind numbing, but it's an important skill set to develop.

What do you mean by, "practical romantic interaction?"

by 'practical romantic interaction' I mean developing romantic interactive skills. Dating in highschool gives the benefit of developing better social skills and knowing how to interact romantically with the opposite sex (or same sex or both :) As opposed to not dating your entire life until adult hood and not knowing what to do with yourself.

Ultimately, the purpose behind all human actions is the same: to experience and gain understanding.

To get to know someone. To gain social experience and most hope to find true love by high school.

To learn, to experience, and to grow.
My first relationship taught me more than I thought was possible.
And sex, sex is good.

It depends on what your objective is. If your goal is to find a spouse, then dating is for finding him or her. You just have to realize you might have to date a lot of losers / weirdos/ sexual deviants / horny @#!% / clingy people / and the list goes on and on...before you find the right one. Even then this assumes YOU'VE got your act together because you attract what you are.
If you're objective is NOT to get married any time soon then dating is for fun. To meet new people and enjoy their company and to learn new things. It also depends on your value and belief system, religious beliefs (if you have any), and what's important to you.
So the purpose of dating is really entirely up to you.
