One cannot find solace in the cavernous woods
But one can find an iced soul in the carnivorous roots.

If you dig deep enough next to the oak tree
Deep in the forest of gold and apricot,
You will find man-eating extensions
From the base of the tree,
Sucking nutrients from the ground,
Desperate for the taste of human flesh,
Craving the succulence of human blood.

If one digs deep enough, digging past the origin
Of these carnivorous roots, one can find
The remains of many another who have stumbled upon
The reality of the unreality that lies in the woods,
In those cavernous woods, where you cannot find solace,
But you can find many an iced soul,
An iced over left-behind,
Another thought that was thunk
And then forgotten,

Like the Declaration of the Rights of Man,
No one deserves what they haven't earned,
And so the forest itself doesn't weep at night,
But tears stream down from the clouds
And when they hit firm, dry green grass-covered ground,
They seep through the surface and feed those roots,
Those carnivorous roots
And the iced soul
Gets a little bit colder.
