So yeah recently I've started having panic attacks. One big one about a month ago and 3 or 4 small ones since then. I met with a counselor today and she asked how I feel about meds if they continue/get worse and honestly I'm not sure. So I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to their experiences with panic attack meds, what you take, what side effects if any, etc.

I'm on a couple things for anxiety/panic attacks.

First, I'm on a basic SSRI which happens to have a small seditive in it. I take Zoloft (sertraline) and it works great for me.

Also, I have two others drugs:
Xanex, which is a fast attacking seditive and really calms me down.
Lorazepam, this is for anxiety, and does quite well. It isn't as fast acting, and can be highly addictive. Besides those, I've had good experiences with them.

To be honest, I'd ask for advice on what to do during a panic attack, because you can't take a pill forever, you do need to try and cope with them with techniques that help them settle down.

I'd also ask about therapy on why these panic attacks arise, and how to help the cause(s), which in turn, could also decrease the frequency and severity.

But, that's just a suggestion.

Hope whatever you choose, it helps.

Oh trust me, I know all that. I'm much more in favor of therapy than meds. I'm actually pretty strongly against meds. And the causes of and coping with the attacks isn't a mystery to me. My counselor suggested I consider the possibility of medical aid if they continue or get worse but she's got me scheduled to meet with her every day for the rest of the semester and I'm fairly confident that consistent meetings will improve my mental state of mind.
