Ashcombe Primary School in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, has told parents that cards declaring love can be “confusing” for children under the age of 11, who are still emotionally and socially developing.

In his February newsletter, Peter Turner, the head teacher, warned that any cards found in school would be confiscated

"We believe that such ideas should wait until children are mature enough emotionally and socially to understand the commitment involved in having or being a boyfriend or girlfriend."

However, Rajeev Takyar, 40, who runs a local newsagent, and has two children Jai, 11, and Aryan, five, at the school, said he was “genuinely outraged”.

He said: "There are schools that have banned conkers and snowballs, and now Valentine's Cards.

"I think banning the cards stops children from having social skills. How are they going to learn about relationships otherwise? It's ridiculous.”

That's fucking stupid. Most teenagers and even a lot of adults don't even understand these things.

Valentines day when you are that young, is about friendship, not about love. This is crazy.

I hate Valentines day as much as the next single nice guy. But this is not the way to go about it. It's like the people running the schools forgot what it is like to be a kid.

What dumbasses.
next thing put children in a plastic bubble and forbid them from touching the world.
Seriously, what generation are they creating with stuff like this?
exploring is part of growing up. >.>

i sort of agree that kids that age are too young to understand the commitment of relationships but what business is that of the school - surely that's a decision for parents?

That is so stupid. When i was in elementary school. valentine cards were for nothing but friendship...or we just felt the need to send them since everyone else was

The school seems to not understand common social traditions.
It is common sense that Valentines Day is not an Adult-only tradition.

It's truly amazing the nonsense that goes on in this world. Shielding the children from petty cards because they may be confused? If that's the case, then shield many adults and adolescents because many don't understand it either. It seems as though the need to protect children has gradually been going more and more off-course. It's no longer about basic protection, it's about shielding children and possibly also the parents by sugar-coating every tiny thing so it has no chance whatsoever of harming anyone. Instead of banning Valentine's Day cards, why not encourage students to show kindness to one another (don't call it love for the moronic reason the school provided) and hand out little candies? I wonder if the school actually understands what Valentine's Day truly is or if they think it's a day of handing out chocolates while saying "I LOVE YOU" to the receiver of chocolates.

The world is a dangerous place but what's also dangerous is stupidity; the first caveman tries to give the sabertooth tiger a little ball of wool while the second caveman gets to a safe place. These people seem to be in line with the first caveman.
