I wrote this about a year ans a half ago for a class. It's based off of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." (obviously)
Not too long ago in Parkville, a young boy named Caleb was playing ball in the street with several of his neighborhood friends. Today, Caleb was given the job of watching the corner of the street for oncoming cars. He decided to have a little fun and call, “CAR!” just to watch all the kids scramble out of the street. Once the kids discovered Caleb was lying and there was no car they resumed playing in the street. Caleb then, having greatly enjoyed watching the kids run off the street, wanted to see it again. So, he called, “CAR!” once more. Subsequently, the kids rushed off the street yet again. The kids, after seeing Caleb shaking with laughter, found that no car was coming after all. Giving Caleb a disgusted look, the kids continued to play in the street. Caleb started to feel sorry for lying to his friends and resolved to lie no longer. He waited on the corner for a while waiting for a car to come. Then he saw one. He called out, “CAR!” but this time no one believed him. They thought he was just lying again. Therefore, they kept playing ball, disregarding Caleb’s warning. Caleb called out to them again,
“There really is a car this time guys!”
One of the kids replied, “Stop lying, Caleb. You’re just trying to make fools out of us again.”
“No, I’m not,” Caleb pleaded. “It really is coming!” Caleb cried in distress.
Then the kids saw the car bolt around the corner hurtling towards them. Some of the kids were able to make it to the sidewalk in time, but several others were not so lucky. The car plowed over the kids, smearing helpless children across the asphalt. Caleb felt horrible. It was his fault his friends were dead. He wished he had never lied to his friends, and wondered if they would still be alive if he had not. From that moment on Caleb always tried his best to be as careful as possible. In the end, Caleb was always referred to as “Careful Caleb.”
