LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- The principal of Litchfield Elementary School has been put on administrative leave after a letter he wrote as a joke commenting on their children's math skills apparently found its way to parents.

Principal Ron Sterr apparently distributed the letter to teachers last week as a joke -- but one teacher who thought it was real sent it home to parents of her second grade class.

The letter read in part: "The math we do is really easy. If your child is either too lazy or too stupid to finish it in class, I'm sending it home so that you can work with them and judge for yourself whether it is laziness or idiocy that inhibits your child's progress."

The principal was put on administrative leave following a flood of phone calls from outraged parents, and is pending further disciplinary action.

Other parents think the district is blowing the letter out of proportion.

"It's just a little levity," says parent Celia Laughlin. "In the times that we're living in right now, any laughs can lift the spirit a little bit, and I don't see anything wrong with that."

"It was a joke, it was never intended for parents to see," says parent Krista Hill. "It wasn't a real letter, it was a joke sent to coworkers, and that's it."

Hill says Principal Sterr is a wonderful principal. "I would hate for anything bad to happen to him over this."

Superintendent Dr. Julianne Lein declined to comment, but she did issue a press release calling the principal's remarks "unacceptable."

Litchfield Elementary School District statement

"On Wednesday, January 26th, an inappropriate parent letter was sent home with a second grade class at Litchfield Elementary School. The letter contained disparaging remarks about students which were unacceptable. The letter was authored by the principal, who was originally not forthcoming with parents in taking responsibility for his actions. The principal has called each parent individually to render an apology and take responsibility. The school district has placed the principal on administrative leave and has removed him from the principalship. Further disciplinary action is pending. The Litchfield School District renders its most sincere apology to our students, parents, community and staff for this incident. We are taking specific steps to remedy this situation."

If anything serious happens to that guy it's ridiculous. It was obviously a joke, no parent could take that seriously after they've been told it was a joke that wasn't even intended for them to read.

Unacceptable.

Joke or not, the context was rather ambiguous and shouldn't have been done in the first place. You have to be a little stupid to think that that's professional.

I like to think I have a superb sense of humor and I don't find this funny. It's stupid, irresponsible, and is psychological reprehensible when dealing with a teenager.

Lets look at how sensitive some of you brats are at times over matters on an internet forum that shouldn't bother you from your peers. Then understand that it coming from an authoratative figure is potentially damaging to the kid's self-confidence. The majority of someone's self-worth comes from those with primacy over them in their younger years.

In another respect, I think people would be overreacting. This is a professional outlet in which you're a figurehead with children.

Unacceptable.

You did read that it was't intended for the children or the parents to ever see the letter. It was just a joking letter to the teachers. It's not as though the teachers aren't allowed to have fun within the school.

Well this sounds like something I would do, but you always need to think ahead about these things. Would you really think you would get away with something like this? Schools are way too overprotective, and parents don't get the meanings of jokes. But my point is he shouldn't have done this in the first place.

Marcus, the parents were never supposed to find out...

i remember hearing about this story on the news.... even though it wasnt intended for other peoples eyes, what satisfaction would someone get out of calling 2nd graders idiots...really that person is an idiot because there supposed to be teaching the kids.

If anyone's to blame, it was the teacher that sent the letter to the parents. It was so obviously not intended for the parents so the teacher should have received the suspension, if anyone should have done.

parents don't get the meanings of jokes.

Ok... but as I said the parents weren't ever supposed to find out - so he didn't consider how they would react because it was a joke within the staff.

"When you do something good, no one remembers.
When you do something bad, no one forgets."

If parents would pay this much attention to other letters that go home with their children, schools would be better places.

You wouldn't know because the students and parents were never supposed to find out.

It's all just one big joke that one idiotic teacher thought was real, if anyone is to blame it's probably her.
