A New York City junior high student has been arrested for doodling on her desk.

Alexa Gonzalez, 12, scribbled "Lex was here 2/1/10" on her desk on Monday. She also wrote "I love my friends Abby and Faith."

Moraima Tamacho says her daughter was released several hours after she was taken in handcuffs to a police station, according to the Daily News.

Education department spokesman David Cantor said the incident shouldn't have happened, and that common sense should prevail.

Last month, the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit alleging more than 20 instances of wrongful arrests and assaults by school safety officers.

Gonzalez has been assigned eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she's learned from the experience.

well i know what my essay would be called and it would be something along the lines of 'is our police force really this incompetent'.

If I were in her shoes, I'd write an essay about how I've never been more sure that the world is run by ignoramuses and buffoons and how there is not one single thing one can do, no matter how mundane or benign, that won't get you under six feet of bullshit with somebody.

It's vandalism and the bitch shouldn't have been writing on desks, but its ridiculous how she got arrested and taken to a police station for something as small as that.

Arrested for writing on a desk... that's extreme.
This girl I went to school with carved her name into a table with a knife,
And she was just given volunteer work in the cafeteria,
And wasn't able to go on any school trips for her remaining time at the school.

So what? I did the same thing to my desk at school along with a bunch of other little pricks. Did I get in trouble? Sure. Did I get arrested for it? lolwut. This is too extreme. The girl took her name and put it in the desk...so what? A lot of kids do it, they don't get in trouble. Of course, that doesn't constitute it as being something good. It's just harmless child's play.

More to the point who the fuck is dumb enough to put their name on a desk? I used to draw on mine. Non-traceable. I guess kids are just morons.

Her own fault. Poor desk. I'm sure if somebody drew all over her, she wouldn't be happy.

She shouldn't have got arrested for it though. At least detention or something.

Being arrested is just a bit extreme. But she won't do it again :P.
She should have gotten maybe a detention, or, if possible, have to pay some of the proce for a new desk.

O_o, ridiculus. Let's celebrate the death of common sense. The max people got in my old school was like, detention (an hour max)? Some of them does not even get a punishment! 8 hours community service? bovine faeces.

It's just a fucking school desk. It's not like she painted a big swastika on the floor. Arrest people for doodling on desks, but let rapists walk free do to some "lack of evidence".

Now kids, don't doodle on desks, or you'll end up like this bitch in handcuffs doing eight hours of community service, and an essay on how you learned from this catastrophe you have put on our desks.

Lol. Essay of what shes learnt?

"I have learnt from this experience, two things.
1. Dont leave my name next time
2. Marker works better"

That's some great police work. I can imagine it just as follows:
Some people are being raped on the sidewalk, drug-dealers are dealing away and a person just got kicked off a 10-story building all while police dodge the falling bodies and walk around the rape victims. At the end of the day, they got the felonious 12-year old, desk-drawer. Job well done team.

Yes it is criminal damage, but having her arrested is over the top more than sevenfold

Sent this to my friend, and she said "too bad she didn't write something worth telling about" and then sent me this:

Yeah, bitch, it's Alexa. 2/1/10 hoes. I run this motherfucker and I can go have a baby in the 8th grade AND go up on the Maury show if I want to. This is New York City. I bet every girl in my class is gonna be knocked up or hittin' a crackpipe before their third senior year. My mom is a cunt and I hate this school. I'm dropping out and there's ain't a GODDAMN thing anybody in this bitch can do about it!

I wrote "fuck love" on one of my desks, right next to where someone wrote "fuck the police". She wrote her name and positive stuff and she got arrested? I'd think the police in New York would have better things to do besides arrest 12 year old girls, but apparently not.

lolwut? How in the hell was that a good point? That's like saying if you ever break the speed limit you get jail time. Yes it's illegal but the punishment is not necessary. Detention? Yeah. Arrested? Fuck no.

Many different states, city, country laws are made. Whichever city or state this event happened in, the law was, if a student were to vandalize a desk, they are to be arrested. I'm pretty sure that's why she was arrested. It was probably a law.

http://www.dumblaws.com

If there wasn't a law against that, it was just a wrongful arrest. Still, she had no business drawing on a desk.
