I don't wanna make a broad statement here :D but in my opinion, caring about people makes you a better person. I care about people because I do and it doesn't matter if they do care about me because ultimately, I feel good about it. If they reciprocate, it just icing on a cake : )

Your mother is right in her own convictions. However, your convictions are just as valid as hers are. If you want to stand for your convictions, then do it. There is nothing to stop you, and if people have a problem with you standing for what you believe in, then fuck them.

It's good that you care for others, but you also must worry about yourself. Sure, I'm a nice guy, I always make sure to see if those around me are ok and if there might be something I can do for them, but I need to think of my well being in some situations. It doesn't make you weak to help others, nor does it show weakness. Showing weakness is when you see a person in need of help and brush them off like dust on your shoulder. Remember what Jeff has said: You might be caring, but you're the one putting their neck out there. You can be taken advantage of very easily. Don't be too overly caring.
