1. Ish. You can be diagnosed with Depression, but not Self Harm. But you can be institutionalized for it.
2. Yes, But it's uncommon and it will usually lead to self harm for curing depression.
3. Sadly..Yes. Because if one day you just go "I think I'll slit my wrist!" There is something going on in your head that you may or may not be aware of.

1.No, but would you really need a diagnosis?
2.Yes, I've done it because I went so long without.
3.I think so, you don't just decide to self harm for no reason. Except those people who do it to look cool, but they usually only just break the skin and tend to flash their scratches by "accident."

1. No you can't. It's not a 'condition,' it's a choice.
2. You can, I don't know why you would, but you can. Anyone can deliberately injure themselves whether they are depressed or not.
3. Not necessarily. Most of the time people will hurt themselves, as a way of dealing with very strong emotions like depression or sometime anger. Some people I've met have injured themselves only for attention. (they've told me this) I guess you could call the underlying problem something like; really strong emotions, or the need for attention.

1. Can you get diagnosed with self harm?
No, but self-harm is a notable symptom for numerous mental disorders.
2. Can you self harm and not be depressed?
Of course. The two seems to be tightly intertwined for me now, but I can recall a prior state of mind whereby they did not.
3. Is there always an underlying problem for self harming?
Most things occur as a result of something(s), whether or not these causes are conscious and direct or not so much; whether or not they constitute a 'problem' is yours to decide.

1. actually, it's new in the world of psychology. It's considered an abnormal psychological disorder called "self-mutilation".
2. Yes, a series of things can follow it though. Maybe not depression, but anxiety, etc.
3. yes and no. It depends on the severity I think.

1. Can you get diagnosed with self harm? My view, no, many people self harm for many reasons, selfharm isnt a disease or illness, its a personal choice,
2. Can you self harm and not be depressed? Yes, once again the personal choice thing.
3. Is there always an underlying problem for self hamring? Not always, but a majority of the time. in my case yes, family issues leading to depression, i only cut usually if me and my dad have a fight, butive made promises not to cut.

Chelsay13 - it is not an abnormal psychological disorder as there is no such thing called "self-mutilation disorder" like you say. It is a characteristic/symptom of a mental illness or a coping mechanism for someone who has inadequate coping skills.
And yes, as most other people have said, there is an underlying problem that provokes it, even if the self harmer is not able to identify it. Even if someone is self harming as a a way seek attention, there is a problem there in itself if the person feels strongly enough to do this as a means of seeking attention.

Self harm is not a choice.
Anyway.
You can be placed in hospital for severe self harming, but there is no diagnosis for it, it's a behavior.
You don't have to be depressed to self harm.
Not always.

Self harm is not a choice. It's a choice, so is depression, and please do not tell me "it's a mental illness" because I have it and choose how I want to feel, or if I want to cut, it's called willpower. I haven't cut in 8 months, whether or not I do it again is my choice.
Anyways;
1. Can you get diagnosed with self harm?: ... No.
2. Can you self harm and not be depressed?: Indeed.
3. Is there always an underlying problem for self hamring?: Sometimes, but some people just enjoy the rush, the pain.

lol, Your opinion, my opinion is it is not a choice, just as MH illnesses are not choices, they choose you.

Self harm is a choice. Which is why you cant help anyone sometimes. If they end up self harming its NOT your fault. Because its their choice to do it. If your saying self harm is not a choice. Then neither is smoking, alcohol addiction, drug addiction or sex addiction. Think about it

Same opinion addictions aren't choices but doing it that first time usually is. Everyone's different some people have naturally addictive personalities and can get hooked on anything or someone could take drugs and not get addicted (though there are few documented cases)

I do agree with that, it is a choice the first time you do it, but there on out, it does not become a choice, it is much more complicated than that & very complex.
Clearly people don't realize that.
Ignorance is not bliss.
