On hands and knees
Breathing in the dirt
You spell out "S O S"
In sand you cannot comprehend,
Miles away from any ocean,
Baking in the rapacious sun,
The sun that takes and takes,
Then breaks, and breaks.

You feel the heat of ten thousand suns,
But in reality, there is only one,
You stare above and pray to some God
That you'll be saved
From this eternal rot.

You sweat profusely, an ocean in sand
Created by desperation within man,
A desire to escape, a desire to live,
Survival instincts beginning to kick in.

You pick up the sand with your non-dominant left hand,
And you throw it toward the sky screaming out "Why, oh why?"
But in the end, you fall victim to the sun,
For you cannot run from the heat of the gun.

Once the trigger is pulled and the bullet is sent flying
There is no fleeing toward a greater horizon,
There is only the sun, baking your soul,
Melting your mindset, the bullet pierces the heart.

You fall to the ground, the sand stained red,
Your arms are laid out, widespread,
The sun still shines, singing all that's left of you,
Your skin turns black and in the darkness of the light
You can hear coyotes howling to the sun,
Late, late at night.
