View Full Version : Living on other planets

Do you think we will ever have the technology to enable us to colonize other planets? Cause, from what I've heard, we will eventually need to one day, if we hope for our race to survive, since even our own mother Earth is mortal (supposedly the Sun is eventually going to explode into a bigger star and destroy it... or something like that).
Naturally, such a proposition would also require us to possess technology that can somehow turn other planets into habitable environments for carbon-based life. Right now, such technology is beyond anything we humans can even begin to conceive... but do you think it will ever be possible?
Also, what about traveling around the universe at faster than lightspeed? We will have to figure out how to do that too, someday, if we ever hope to be able to get around the universe in decent time... but with current technology, it is beyond impossible to achieve.
I think there must be a way to do both of those things... we just haven't figured it out yet.

The only planet that would be able to sustain life in this Solar System would be, in my opinion, Mars. The Jovian Planets are to gaseous, and Mercury and Venus are to close to the sun. But, even then, it will still be harmed when the Sun ends up becoming a Red Giant.
I do think it's possible, but it wont happen for many decades.
For the Speed thing...No. There's no way, unless we gain some scientific achievement, and it must be a major one, that we can travel through the Universe, or even our own Galaxy. That has a very slim to none chance of ever happening.

We have about five billion years until the sun starts growing like that, by then we'll be long extinct if we haven't moved off.
To be honest, yes I do think we'll be able to make the technology to terra-form other planets one day, but not in our lifetime. Most likely not in even our grandchildrens lifetimes. As for getting around space at faster than light speeds, they have a few theories, mostly to do with warping space (sounds stupid to me but I don't have a degree in physics), but again, it won't be happening any time soon.

I think that we will be able to, but maybe not in our lifetime but in our childrens lifetimes! But you never know, we might be able to in ours who knows..? I think that it would be great!

Just as there are limits with sports records I think there are limits to what we'll be able to do with technology, so we'll probably be extinct before we solve the problems of space travel

The sun is expanding everyday. And everyday is gets a little bit hotter. There are many theories into space travel: warping space like to make a 'wormhole' or even nuclear bombs attached to the back (Project Orion)! For us to inhabite another planet, we would need radiation protection, oxygen, food, supplies, heating and cooling systems and advanced easy-to-build housing units. Being able to produce all this would take some time and alot of careful planning. Some scientists think that mankind would not last 1000 more years unless we span out into space.

Terraforming, my friend.
NASA is planning to put a base on the moon to see if it is good and stuff, which is basically a trial to see if we could put a base on Mars. But for Mars to be suitable without space suits, we would have to terraform.
Faster than light travel? Nope. Light speed is basically impossible. Wormholes, if we ever find out how, then yes, but that's not really speed.

(supposedly the Sun is eventually going to explode into a bigger star and destroy it... or something like that).
Correct, however that will be in over a billion years.
Naturally, such a proposition would also require us to possess technology that can somehow turn other planets into habitable environments for carbon-based life. Right now, such technology is beyond anything we humans can even begin to conceive... but do you think it will ever be possible?
If we are able to find planets that are Earth-like, then it makes this transition easier. So I do think we'll be able to inhabit other planets but they'll likely be planets that have similarities with Earth (i.e. atmosphere, water, etc...). However, other planets in our solar system are farther from the Sun than Earth is, so even if we inhabit it, we'll need to develop specialized housing confinements and ways to extract and use the resources from the planet.
Also, what about traveling around the universe at faster than lightspeed? We will have to figure out how to do that too, someday, if we ever hope to be able to get around the universe in decent time... but with current technology, it is beyond impossible to achieve.
Reaching light speed is essentially impossible for us to achieve currently, nevermind exceeding it. Laws of physics dictate that travelling beyond light speed is viewed as impossible, unless we find "short-cuts" or wormholes, or similar things. The only thing I know of that may travel faster than the speed of light is something we want to avoid as much as possible: black holes because they can pull in light. They may not be able to exceed the speed of it but they are able to exceed light by being the only things to be able to pull it into a certain direction.

Frankly I don't see that happening for millions of years, but due to pictures from satellites scientists have said that for every star you see there is a universe, so if there a trillions of other planets out there, who's to say we won't live on a new one one day?

I think we are going to at some point.

my theory is that nothing unreal exists, but living on another planet doesnt sound unreal. it will happen eventually
