Mother 'forced son to kill hamster'

A woman is in jail after police say she forced her 12-year-old son to kill his pet hamster with a hammer as punishment for bad grades.

The sheriff of a rural Georgia county said that the boy told his teacher about the killing. The teacher then reported it to state child welfare authorities, who in turn contacted police.
Lynn Middlebrooks Geter, 38, faces charges of animal cruelty, child cruelty and battery.
Police said she remains in jail and it is not immediately known if she has a lawyer.

This is a really sick story, not just for the hamster but also for the boy. He could have real trauma from that, its just horrible.

Anyway it's not about that, it's the fact that he was forced to kill his pet.. now whether you have a pet hamster or a pet horse it's just wrong. It will disturb the kid for a long time.

You've got a point there... You may say all creatures lives are equal, but a dog is more important to people than a hamster... most people anyway.

I've done some thinking and I actually don't think he will be scarred for life or anything. I had to kill a mouse because it was stuck on one of those sticky traps and no one else would do it. So they handed me a BB gun pistol and told me to shoot it. I did. And it splattered on me. That didn't scar me at all. I doubt this kid will have trouble later in life. If it was a human or a dog or even a cat then I could understand, but hamsters can hardly develop a relationship with you like a dog or a cat can.

Regardless of whether a hamster's life is more important than another organism's life, the reason behind the killing is horrible. The thing that gets me though is since she did this when the kid got bad grades, I'm wondering, what else has this awful mother done to her son or made her son do? If the hammering of the hamster doesn't traumatize the son, whatever else she may have done or had him do probably would traumatize him.

that's sick and disgusting. i feel so sorry for the kid. when i was little, we had pet rats, and when the got pneumonia and died, i cried at night for weeks. I can't imagine what this kid is feeling since his mother MADE HIM kill his hampster. someone really needs to hit the mother over the head with a hammer, no scratch that. for proper proportions, it should be a sledgehammer.
