In UK it is generally when you are 25 or older, but in US or Canada 18+ year olds are encouraged to do so. There is a lot of info on this subject on the net (ie. Google). Hope that helps.

I'd say go once you're sexually active. But 16/17 is a fine age to go I think. The Uk is far too late. Getting earlier now though.
