Whats the difference between rep power and rep points?

Rep power is how many points you give/take from someone's reputation. For instance, you have one- meaning it won't make a big difference if you rep anybody with rep higher than that of a newer poster. I, on the other hand, have 65, and so it usually makes a bit of an impact when I rep somebody. The more rep points you get, the more rep power you receive. Also, I believe you get one rep power for ever 6 months on the site and every 500 posts. Someone may correct me on that though.

I'm not disagreeing becasue I have no idea, but I'd never heard of the 6 month and 500 post thing.
Anyway.
If someone with 100 rep power +repped you, you'd receive 100 rep points.
If the same person -repped you, you'd only lost 50 rep points.
