View Full Version : Why is it all about cutting?

I just noticed that most of the posts are about cutting and not other methods of self-harm that people use. I burn and i have also self-poisined on one occasion but i have never really cut. I was just wondering why people always talk about cutting as though it is the only form of self harm.

It isnt the only form

If the majority of talk is about cutting that's because its what the majority of members (that SH) do. Its not that anyone is trying to pretend other things dont happen or dont matter as much. People write about their own experiences.

There has been a few threads about other forums. But I'm guessing that cutting is the most common.

Not all posts are about cutting, even though the majority are. Its just because it's the most common form of SH used. Take me for example: I do cut but I also burn myself and drink alcohol often to recieve the same feelings that I get from cutting. Its important to see that SH has many other forms too. Cutting is just the most spoken about one.

It is one of the most common forms, but there are other common forms too.

Other ways I've self harmed;
overdosing(dozens of times, however, a lot were suicide attempts), biting myself, scratching myself, pulling my hair, slapping myself, punching myself, punching walls, scraping my hand against a wall (it'd end up wounding my hand&more so my knuckles), punching other things, (hard desks, the floor, doors, etc), I have also harmed myself through ED behaviors too, & I have strangled myself with a rope to punish myself & try to harm myself but not to kill myself. So I guess that could count as self harm too.

I've done quite a lot of behaviors since I first started, (age 7), & I've also tried to get others to harm me too, if that makes sense, so I guess that's a way of self harming?

It can be very complex for one person, they may go through many different behaviors, some behaviors may occur at the same time, some take over other behaviors, others may only experience one or two behaviors, cutting seems to be the most common form & more likely form of self harm from what I've seen in this part of the forum, & other forums too. But there are dozens of other self harming behaviors that millions do too, possibly alongside cutting, but also possibly not.

Lecture over.

So it has been said but many self harmers use cutting for many different reasons mabie one is that they cant get any other resource to self harm with.
Also many people may not be happy sharing how they self hamr with people even more so if they dont use the 'norm' methord.

I suppose that it's the most common, I've seen a few people on here who stick to burning though.

Probably because, as everyone else has said, it is the most common form of self injury. Not because it's the only one.

it's certainly not the only form. but it's one of the most common.

Often its also because cutting is something you can do easily. Poisoning and burning isn't so easy because you may not have access to anything that could do that sort of damage. with cutting basically any sharp object will get you what you want. The same can't be said for the other two.

I think everyone assumes it is the only form, i do see the rush of seeing blood as one of the main reasons for the 'popularity' but all forms are serious and burns leave the worst scars
