what if you use one of those free website creators to host the chat on?
like webs.com
the site could be like VTChat.webs.com or something
anyway suggestion is to have it on a site other than VT, a site dedicated just for VT chat
on webs, you can run chats, so then it wouldnt slow down the forums here

Well, I think it also depends on moderation.
The senior staff would not only have VT to look after, but that site as well.
People could just get on there and harass other members. I don't think it's worth the trouble. Ant will find a solution. It's not like we really need a flash chat.

What if we posted the flashchat we already used onto that site? and logged into it etc?

I don't know. We'd have to see what Ant or Steph has to say about it.

Nuuuu u cnt du tht bcuz ppl r get hurrasd!!!!!!!!11!!!1!!!!11
Solution: don't trade pics and don't feed the trolls.
An off-site chat seems to be the best idea yet.

Well, they have to think about the well being of the members.

You can't protect people forever. Besides, the people that use a chat should used to creepy motherfuckers on it. It's the internet, you can't censor the internet.
That Which Cannot Be Name On VT has thoroughly proved that.

people barely used the chat anyway and when one comes back it'll be barely used too.

You could say that Kyle, but it is used. Thats the point to why we should get another, is cause even if its barely used, it still is used. :)

Sounds like a good idea....
But let Ant figure it out. You know he's God by the way. :P
And people won't die because the flash chat is down for a bit..

If it's hardly used then it's no big deal to host it for free on a free site

Think of the people that will complain if it doesn't get moderated well though..

No since it's hardly used it's no big rush to get it back so the admins can take their time and find the best possible fix.

How will it link to Vt?
will it copy your sign in name?
or will you have to sign in as yourself on it?
since thats a stupid thing as i could go on sign in as some random member and break the rules as them getting them banned
eh?

I don't think it's a very good idea.
We need a chat system that links into the VT database so that people can't use any username to pretend to be someone they're not which could and would cause problems.

The only thing I know of that does all that costs $125 a year. I know since my brother uses it on his forum. So by all means, get that.

You don't really, though. You just need IPs logged so that you can verify identities.

Having to verify an IP address from one site then another is just a waste of time though.

As big a waste of time as settling upon an inferior software alternative merely so that it slots into the database? Yes, there's potential for abuse, but the point is that such abuse can ultimately be dealt with in most software without it being a problem. It's not like you're going to have to verify every single person's IP.

thats the way we do it
anyway we need something that can link directly to vt
so that staff can still be given control in it
if it links to vt it needs vt rules enforced
and i dont know a way for sorting that all i know is its what is needed for an chat to be official to vt

It would be cool to see how many people actually used the chat to see if its even worthy to find another solution.

That make one of you. Come on, I checked the chat almost every time I logged on to see if there was anyone in it. The most I ever saw was 5 and 3 of those were people that I've never even seen on the site before with about 10 posts...

I liked having an integrated chat room and it did get used a fair amount. I trust Ant to find the best solution and think we should just leave it in his capable hands.

The problem with that is a lot of people can share the same IP address.
The best solution for VT is ultimately an integrated, isolated chat room. There are enough problems on forum as it is and there isn't any need to add more unknown people to the list of problems.

Updated solution, if we posted the old chat onto there, wouldnt we just have to log into our regular accts? therefore people not registered cant get in

Matt, you should try being productive.
Ant, I think he's saying you could put the chat we had on the site, so only members from here can log on.

*gasp!* A double poster? WE SHALL SMITE THEE!
Anyways, as others have said, it's too much work. Tracking all the IPs and all the other techy stuff would be too much, not to mention possibilities of some unsavory characters getting into the mix. Having an integrated chat with the site would be best.

It sounds difficult. Let Ant figure it out. He will find some way of fixing it but just give him time.
