hosting a website from home?

OK, I have done some research on this and with my newbie HTML skills I think I want to try hosting a website from home....Problem is that I can't find the right type of software or anything (free software, not the costly $900 stuff).

Any suggestions?

Try running a Linux box (Such as Ubuntu Server) as your web server.

Or you could see if your school participates in the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance. If it does, you can get Windows Web Server 2008 for free.
