I just have a simple question.

IN ROTW, why can't you bump old threads if you add to the discussion?
I'm on another forum where the "general discussions" part where even if it is old, as long as pertains to the thread, it won't be locked. I mean, there's no harm in doing it, and the only real reason I can see is "the discussion died, so leave it dead", which still a goofy reason for a debate forum.

That's just the rule for the forum as the entirety (except for the diaries). Bumping an old thread gets it locked. Simple as that even if one does add to the discussion.

Well that's counter-intuitive. Not to mention silly.

Hm, I suppose it is to an extent. However, most bumped thread in RotW are from newer members going, "lol i agre" and this adds nothing to the conversation as a whole. It would only make sense to lock them.

I agree with that. If only we had an operation stupid filter to implement.

Anyway, I think if there is more discussion to be had, then why lock it?

If there is more discussion to be had while said discussion is still active, then there is no reason to lock. However, if someone comes around and decides to randomly bump the thread, it goes against the site's rules and the thread must then be locked. I've seen more threads in RotW get locked because of friendly debates turned into fights, thus getting locked than the discussion ending and two or three months later gets bumped.

It's up to the moderator that sees the thread or reads the report. I've left threads in ROTW open that were bumped and i'm sure other mods have too. But like there if it's a thread that's 6 months to a year old then it's going to be locked you can just remake that thread.

But why if it's already made? Doesn't make any sense.
I mean, if you're just gonna lock it if someone bumps it, might as well delete them all past the fifth page or something because no one can post in them. (I'm just talking about ROTW for that part)
The forum I was talking about in my OP deletes threads past the third page.

There's no use posting in a debate over 6 months old but still people can go back and read through them. There's no use posting in a debate where all the people in it are no longer active members. And just deleting them is unnecessary and a waste of time because like I said you can always go through them and read other people's points and stuff from the past.

Not true matt.
Not all threads that are bumped gets locked.
Generally threads in Psych Ward don't get locked unless its completely ancient. Threads are locked in p101 a lot mostly because there is so much repetition and want people to friggin search for their answer (hint.)

The rest of the forums are either really new or don't have many bumped threads or have threads that are bumped stay open.

Like Thomas said, it depends on the circumstances and the moderator.
If you brought a thread back for a reason, then I think it would generally stay opened

I personally think its fine to continue a debate if it is the exact same quesiton and you want to debate more with it
